This Turbine powered Superboat Y2K is at MRD in Lindenhurst getting rigged. It's powered by a GE T58 Turbine, which produces 1400 HP. It will be coupled to a Sage #8 Surface DriveThis boat is soo custom. 5 fuel cells, for a total of 250 gal. Rather then the fiberglass windscreeens on a Y2K. The Turbine is getting F16 canopies, which are 4" higher. So no wind in your face. It should be completed by spring hopefully.
Here is a link to TurboKart. Dono is the owner of this boat, and this is his turbine website.

Probably not a bad idea to have someone compute the amount of air that General needs...don't think you can cover the intake like that. Also, remember turbines have no cooling system per se. They get very hot after shutdown.
Awesome setup - always love to see a turboshaft used in something other than a helicopter.

Riverman,
All the computing has been done. The scoop on the engine hatch ducts directly to the intake, along with the intakes in the side of the deck. Not to worry about a thing. Everything has been thought out already. This project has been going on for almost 2 years. It's now at MRD getting rigged.

You might want to ask them to check this one.
It appears that air comes in through a rear deck hatch, then goes forward around the engine casings inside that curved engine shroud, around and into the air filter, then back through the engine.
I took a guess at the dimensions, about a 19" diameter for the inside of the shroud, and 15" diameter for the base of the air filter (and it looks like it actually may be closer than 2" clearance in some places). At the 13.7 lbm/s listed on the turbokart website for full power, I came up with ~1psi pressure drop just getting past the edge of that filter (ignoring other losses in getting to that area, through the filter, etc). A typical guideline for maximum entrance losses is 2 inches of water, or less than 0.1psi. This is a huge driver for turbine power and efficiency.
Also, 1psi across that shroud is hundreds of pounds of force.
Just something to think about before you get to testing.
I suggest running without the shroud, and see what happens to the bikinis on the girls in the back seat.

The amount of air a gas turbine engine needs is beyond most peoples belief. With that many direction changes and the small area you have around the engine I can't see it breathing properly. Engines three times the size of the T58 can pick people off the ground and suck 'em in.
Jet engine test cells have a measured factor used in the power calculations called "cell depression" . Even the smallest restriction in engine inlet pressure causes measureable losses in horsepower (thrust). The engine test cell at CFB Cold Lake is the size of a large gymnasium with the upper third of the walls open, yet the cell still has substantial depression.

Mat,
As I said, everything has been calculated out already. We exceeded the required air flow for this motor. Between the scoop intake. There are also 4 side intakes, and the rear hatch opening of 2" X 65". Look at Turbine boats like Miss Geico and Jetset. They have nothing more then 8 of the side intakes for 2 turbines.
This first shot shows the side air ducts

I went and saw the boat yesterday at MRD. It looks awesome!
Im concerned about the offset weight. With the turbine weighing much less than a traditional power plant, and extra fuel in the bow, I think the boats handling characteristics are going to me much different than anything else. On a regular 30 most of the weight is in the stern. The turbine is much lighter than a big block and is set forward more, and with the extra fuel up front... Are you guys concerned about the bow being too heavy ?
FX10 Superboats
02-09-2008, 12:51 PM
Jay, there re 2 -55 gal. tanks on either side of thew turbine, 1' from the transom. That right there is alot of weight.. There will be multiple fuel pumps to move the fuel around to where its needed. The ride should be around the same. Quite a few of the Y2K's have forward ballast tanks for running in the ruff stuff. So that forward tank could come in real handy. If not needed, it can be bled off first.

So many experts... so little time.
This was directed at me? I would not claim to be an expert, but I do design gas turbines for a living.
The problem I see isn't getting air into the rear compartment where the fuel tanks are, its getting it from the rear compartment to the inlet of the engine.
In the picture below, the blue line is the air filter base. Air has to flow around it (from behind to in front) to get into the engine. If there isn't 3-4 inches of clearance all the way around (it looks like 1-2"), it isn't enough.
If you don't want to change the design, at least run a vacuum gauge right next to the air filter.

Matt,
As I said before, and I'll say it again. It has all been figured out already. And every thing is fine.
You showed a blue line in the picture as the air filter base. That line is over a blanket that was put over the turbine to keep it clean. The blue line should be back around 8" from where you had it. The picture below shows the Turbine minus the blanket. Also, the air breather is 17" at it widest part. Leaving 7" of clearance around the breather. But were talking intake here. The intake is only 10" as shown in my picture. Leaving 14" of clearance around the intake. Or 7" each side. ;) As I said Matt, it's all been figured out already.
Using pie r squared. The intake is 78.53981634 ci.. Our side intake alone exceed 112 ci. Plus 152 ci. from the scoop. And another 130 ci. from the rear of the hatch. Those alone equal 394 ci. We exceeded the the opening by 5 times. Plus the intake can draw additional air from under the dashes. No doubt these intakes will have suction, and caution will have to be taken around them. Stick your arm near Miss Geico's intake, and you'll loose an arm.
This first picture will show you dimensions.

Again, nothing wrong with the ducting. Maybe I just can't see how it works from the pictures.
If you instrument that cavity you'll verify the design, less than 0.1psi difference from inside the shroud to atmospheric, with zero as ideal, at max power.
Good luck with it. I wish I could take on a project of this scale.

Is the turbine Y2K using the old or new Y2K hull? Interesting project!
It seems Superboat is one of the few east coast manufacturers developing new boats to add to their already impressive lineup. Keep up the great work, Rick!

Maureen, if you could pop off a few shot of the Turbine at MRD that would be great. It sucks with me, because right now, I'm depending on OPP (Other Peoples Pictures). And as you can see.... We need the Master Photographer to snap off a few. If you could, that would be great.

That Sage drive is very cool. Looks like a jackplate set up at the hull, does that allow prop centerline changes? Looks like the arrangement would not allow trim in or out. Not sure if that would be required on that extreme application.
EDIT, found the website, it does allow trim as well.

Propster, the Sage is like you said. Unlike the Arneson, it has 8" of travel up or down, plus trims in and out. Look at the pictures of the drive in post #1. And look at the 2 pictures of the drive. One picture is large, other smaller. But you can see the tail end of the drive trims on a CV joint.

This is quoted from the Turbokart website
"As the pictures show, most of the plumbing for the fuel system, lubricating systems, water cooling system, trim and power steering, and hydraulic N2 brake have been completed, and now we are focusing on getting the wiring done. Like the previous turbine boat, this boat will have both 12 volt and 24 volt electrical systems running off the same batteries and sharing a common ground. 24 volts are used for the starter, igniter, the fuel de-richment solenoid, and the water pump, while the rest of the boat operates off of 12 volts. The alternator is 24V, and charges both batteries.
Once the wiring is complete, we will be ready to fire up the turbine for the first time in the boat. Once we find a prop to get started with, we will put the boat in the water for the maiden run and initial tests. While we are in the process of testing the boat and dialing in the prop, we will then work on putting the finishing trim touches on the boat. Initial water tests may only be about a month away, and I am hoping to get some preliminary video. "

This T58 Turbine turns at 22,000 RPM. A reduction box is used to lower the RPM to 6,000. 6,000 is prop RPM As the Sage surface drive is 1:1 ratio. MRD did an incredible job rigging this boat. The problem is that MRD doesn't have any test props that are made to turn up that high.
I contacted my friend Jeff Cropper, owner of J C Performance engines for props. Jeff makes sick HP big block motors that turn up into 7,500 RPM. He has test props for Dino, and will be dialing it in next spring.

We're figuring 125 is a safe number. The calculations we did put it around 145. The prop Dino has on it to try from MRD is sucking air at 70 and 6000 RPM. It was just a prop to get it in the water to work the bugs out. As I said, Jeff (JC Performance) will do the dialing in next spring.

Hows the handling rick? I always thought the design superboats were made for rough water capabilities. The way i was explained (and im NO expert by any means, ha!), the deadrise of the y2k's arent made to go much faster than 85-86mph. After that it takes a tremendous amount of power to go faster, as it seems is the problem now. That ride is still BADASS, im sure the owner is very happy with it! Do you know where the owner will be running it next summer???

I believe Dino is from your neck of the woods. There in long beach. The hull is capable of speeds in excess of 100. A good example of a narrow 24 degree deadrise hull that goes well over 120 is Jeff Croppers ( J C Performance motors) 32 Activator. Hull is very simular to ours. And jeff put mad HP in it to make it go that fast. Like 1100 HP or more. Mike ( Zuperboat has hs 30 Superboat over 100 with around 800. And Don with Reinforcer had his up to 100 with a JC Performance 825.(with me driving) And that was GPS.
As Gary, Mike, Dave and Don will tell you and anyone else that has driven these narrow 24 degree hulls. You better know how to drive a boat. And yes ..... they can go that fast.
