I am gettin all new gauges in my vegas and i wanted to do away with the speedo cause its useless. A gps speedo would be a good fix but i like seeing where i am and around here havin a digital chart can be the difference between 20ft and aground. My problem is the mount for my gps is flimsy and ugly plastic (garmin gps 186) so i was considering recessing it in the dash where the speedo hole is. what do you think? anyone ever done it? have any pictures?

thanks
kevin

That's not a bad idea Kevin. I might try that. My dash is only 3/4 inch plywood anyways and is easy to cut into.

i'll get some pics up tonite, interestingly, the garmin will read up to 3 digits for speed so it goes from 99.9 mph to 100 mph and you just lose the decimal point, definetely cool, i was worried it wouldn't read 100 or more

try 2 pices of star board. a face plate and a backer board.a router works best to grove a line the size of your face plate.the backer board screw from the back so the face flate is clean.

here's a pic, this is one of the newest garmins, it is the 440, all in color, it has a built in voltmeter(eliminates the need for an analog voltmeter), along w/ an odometer(i installed several months ago and already have 500 miles on it!), but the cool thing is you don't need to buy the chip for it, it has a good built in base map for most areas that shows water depths and channel markers, the only thing i would redo is to use boat life caulk instead of 101 sealant, the 101 gets mildew on it and yellows, the boat life doesn't

your gps will look fine!!! i like yours, it records peak speed, i wish mine did!!!(mine might if i sat down and read the instructions!) i tried to drive the boat and take a pic of it at 104-good luck!!! i couldn't drive and hold the camera straight
