I have a 2003 Johnson 150hp 20" shaft lower unit that i recently purchased for my 96 Johnson 150hp motor. I changed out the shift shafts myself because they are not the same. I took apart the case to make sure everything inside looked good as i have built these units before. Well i didnt get 300ft from the dock and it sounds as if there were marbles in the case. I tore it back down and discovered that the pinion bearings were all galded up and grinded down on some. And not to mention the driveshaft surface is shot. I put the bearings back in the race with omc's triple guard and they bearings looked great. My question is what in the hell happened? Any help to what might have gone wrong would greatly be appreciated.
