I got a call a few days ago from Parker who said you gotta come over. He was going through his garage and came up with a lot more stuff accumulated over the years by his Father Randy Rabe. I could not believe it, boxes and boxes of stuff! I grabbed my camera from my car and took a few pictures of some of the pictures (explains the poor quality on some), engine stands, signs, OEM decals, race memorabilia... This stuff really belongs in a museum. The sense of history looking through the tons of stuff was overwhelming.

Parker said he was going to send it down to greg, but until then (please be patient guys, this stuff is old, hard to scan and correct, catalog...etc) here is a sampling and the next installment of the Hammer Down Galleries. Enjoy.

Figured that would get some interest. My dad, ole gator, and a bunch of guys I knew from going to the races when I was young listed there. I am sure there are several who are members here, wonder who else will chime in?:)

That is the factory 650X/700X mid for that motor ... awesome isn't it? The 650XS decals do not belong above that mid and a Speedmaster lower unit.

Looks like the blue and white boat is on top of 295's sponson?

Mark75H

Looks like the blue and white boat is on top of 295's sponson?I think it is a little confusing because 2 boats between 295 and 486 are touching and both are part blue and part white. They are #'s 575 (Harry Kerslake) and 76. I think it just looks like 295 is under 575 because 295 is closer to us.

#251 was early to the start, #76 was late and is charging up to the start and the other boats closed up his line

Parker, Fish, this is amazing. I almost lost it when I saw the list of entrants in the program. So many names, some I forgot about--and I was in it only for about 4 years running the OPC races in Miami with the South Florida Outboard Club.

It hurts--but hurts so good. Parker, keep 'em coming.

Picture a split second before and a split second after Parker's pic

Is this where Reggie is not so considerate and causes some drivers to not have a happy day I spoke to Danny Piggot (#486) about this last fall, his recollection was that it wasn't really anyone's fault. There was a space Reggie (#76) could have come thru when he started charging up, but when he arrived, it just wasn't there.

I think Parker's pic helps us to see this at a slightly different time and understand what actually happened

The Stinger is on my father's SE at the Marine Stadium in the late 70's. That's him, Jeff Titus, standing just to the right of the van. He designed and built it after he was hurt badly in a Mod-U in Tallahassee. Mom made him slow down.

Yes...propane on the van. The boat...not so much. Shouldn't we both be working?

p.s. with the price of gas the propane may be the way to go

Picture looks to be from about the mid 60s. The lines of the boat look like a Sabre or Critchfield, the motor looks like a 50 with Ride Guide steering and the driver is wearing an APCO life jacket. By the late 60s most everyone was running cable steering and wearing GenTex jackets. By the color of the water and the camera angle it looks like a picture taken of the Gold Coast Marathon or one of the other point to point races popular back then.

rnelems
04-07-2008, 04:49 PM
Motor has the chrome bar over the top cowl, that makes it a 63 or 64. I believe the 1965 models did not have the chrome bar. Man, I must be old to remember stuff like this when I can't remember what I had for lunch.:)

2us70
04-07-2008, 05:44 PM
Some guys only ran the special event races like the "Gold Coast Marathon" so we didn't see those boats very often. Few of the special events only guys could keep up with the regular OPC runners so we also didn't see much of the in the races either.

The 1967 Model Mercs were the last year the chrome piece (actually aluminum) that used the top cowl trim from the factory. The 1250 Mercs and the smaller engines came without them in 1968.
