I bought a project boat a few years back and i am just getting around to working on it. i was told it was a 1983 377 scarab but all of the pictures I have seen of a 83 377 shows them with a glass windshield and low bow rails. My project has a fibreglass windshield with a low stainless rail going up the middle of the deck.Can anyone shed any light on what boat i have? the serial number indicates that it is a 83 but not sure of the package that i have.

usedparts, thanks for that info looked around the internet and that's exactly what it looks like. i do not have any pictures, but will get some.is that hull worth investing any large money into?

It depends on condition, just about all 37 foot performance boats will hold good value.
You have to out-way how much it need verses what it will cost to buy a replacement.

thats a big boat, handle some big water! what power are you thinking of? thats where the cha ching begins! my dream project one day would be to do some diesels n arnesons :D the cummins in the dodge pickups are crankin like 500hp modded up, and relatively in expensive. good luck, keep us posted on your progress. fun out

the motors and outdrives have long been scraped, so i am starting a total rebuild and going to lighten up as much as possible and leaning towards tripple 300xs.

well i got a 30 motion with twin 280's to really move, just want to make a party boat out of the 38.

at rite dare is some serious cha ching ;) i don't care who you are. i saw a 35'+ fountian at the miami show w/2 yanmar 420's and arnesons tha was running in the 80's

well mr.fun I would have liked to go with diesels but there are no dealers or certified techs down here to cover warranty work, and for resale in the bahamas outboards are the way to go. And outboard mechanics are a dime a dozen and the last time i checked those diesels are also kinda pricey.

Hi,
Im new to this site. I own an 83 377 Scarab that I have been working on for about 2 years. This restoration came to a complete stop on Feb 17th around 1900 when a Ford Supervan came flying thru the yard and imbedded itself in the Scarab, shattering the top deck completely and about the first 10 feet of the bow. I'm having problems with the insurance companys as to the value of the boat since it is total lose.
The haul was in perfect shape, the cream color gel coat had come back to life after a good buffing. The boat has a pair of BB 330HP with Valvet transmissions and TRS drives. I had already redone the TRS's and was ready to pull the motors and trans to replace the seals.
Im devastated for the lose, since it took me over 10 years to aquire the boat from the original owner.
Any help would be appriciated, I dont think the boat can be repaired.

When you read the serial number imbedded on the transome, the last 3 numbers will be 377 if it is a 377 Scarab if not, its a 38 footer

Sorry about your lost who would have thought, the last three digits are 377.do you know what kinda speed she ran with those 330's?

I never got to ride in the boat but was told that cruising speed was some where between 40 to 45 and top speed depending on how much stuff (fuel,people and your favorite beverages) was 55 to 60. Again I was told that with less than a half tank ( 100 Gal.)of fuel, and 2 people and an empty boat 60 to 65 was abtainable on a cold day with a good chop on the water. Good luck on your boat. look for engines with a good flat tork line.

Those boats are stupid heavy. 10 years ago everybody and their brother around here were running over themselves to go to FLA and buy these things. 3 300xs's will get you an honest 65-70 mph boat. They have no lift for any kind of speed, but the bulk and hull design will plow through just about anything you'd care to drive through. And after opening up the engine compartment you can have one hell of a partying people hauler. The last one I worked on we put 2 3.4 275's on it, floored over the engine bay for fish compartments and loaded it up with down riggers for salmon fishing. Loaded up with gear, people and gas it'll run 52-55 through anything.

Sounds like a cool project. The cheapest way to get that thing in the water would be to find some 330 or 420 HP motors with transmissions and TRS drives. Old school miami vice cool. Putting newer big blocks with bravo drives or triple 300xs's would be really expensive.
I would put together some realistic goals, time and costs associated with all of the options to see what works best for you. It's your boat, have fun with it.
