olympus just came out with a 20x zoom camera. that goes to 510 mm. i've had good luck with their cameras in the past. bad side is it'll be under 500.

Zoom lenses with tons of range frequently have tons of distortion, especially at the ends of its range. Edges of buildings may have a distinct curvature or freakish tilt. Also, look for soft focus at the corners of the frame (you won't be able to see it on the camera's screen). Edges in high contrast areas may have weird coloring (this is the most difficult to work around). Having said that, it may be a great camera.
