I have been going through my stereo system and most of the wood panels were the speakers are screwed to are stripped. Boats take a beating and the thin plywood interior panels don't hold the speaker screws very long. Not a new issue. As I was pulling screws out, I could hear the metal nut plates falling off the back and landing on the fuel tank.
Anyone have a better method to hold the speakers on?

I through bolted mine. 10-32 phillips head bolts with washers and fiber locks on the backsides.

It is not easy to get to the back of the speakers in my boat, have to pull the whole panel. I was thinking of glueing 1/4 or 3/8 plywood rings to the back of the panel at the speakers to give the screws more to bite into.
maybe try some t-nuts

T-nuts would work, but require a bit of meat (and not hard fiberglass) to pull into. Depends on what you have to work with there David.
if its just glass you can do as you thought and just put a block of wood or a ring behind it, you can screw, epoxy, or even hot glue it in place. Once you screw the speaker to it the wood will be good to go.
I have used t-nuts turned the other way on thin stuff, but you do need something for it to initally grab onto.

My panels are 1/4-3/16 plywood with foam and vinyl stapled to it. Kind of leaning towards the back up ring idea. I will check with the local shops to see if they have some pre-made.
