Ok Guys,
I know I am gonna take a hit on this one but I am gonna throw it out there. I am not a speed racer...I am a fisherman. BUT, I like my boat to go fast. I fish with my brother who has a bass boat that goes close to 60-65 mph. I know bay boats aren't built to go that fast but I wanna get closer. My boat will do about 50-55 right now. I have a bay boat with a tunnel hull that is 22 feet long. I have a 250 E-Tec on it and use a Raker 3 blade 14 1/2 X 22. At WOT I am at 5800 RPM. I am just learning about props and looking to maybe change it out for more speed. I figured you guys would be the experts to ask. What would you guys recommend for SPEED and not performance.
Thanks

Low water pick up creates drag at speed less then 80mph.... he doesn't need it.

SOUNDS LIKE IT IS AS GOOD AS IT'S GONNA GET.
LIKE YOU SAID ALREADY "BAY BOATS AREN'T BUILT TO GO THAT FAST."

Thanks for all the replies. Going out this weekend and I am going to change to my 3 blade, Raker, 14 1/2 x 22 after it has been refurbished and rebalanced and after talking to local prop shop. He wants me to get some RPM and MPH numbers with this prop and then check back with him. I'll also take some pics for here and give you guys the numbers as well. He seemed to think that this will probably be about as good as it gets. Changing pitch at this point will only get me 1/2 to 1 mph difference. However, I will keep hope for now.

when are you guys going to learn that lwpu does not necessarily slow you down. yes if your at 3" below the pad and you add lwpu it will slow you down, i'll give you that no issue. but with lwpu you can usually raise the motor to 1" and above and with the right prop you'll be faster.

Bob's right, the cresent shape to the nose cone is what slows heavier sub 80mph boats down, as it reduces the tail lift created by a blunt nose . There are a number of LWP manufacturers that market a non cresent cone into a LWP unit. Getting the motor higher is a must for higer speeds without LWP jacking the motor risks low water pressure engine failure. Good solution just get the right cone. Good point Bob!

Boat hull weighs 1900 lbs. Motor + persons and gear will probably add 1300 or so more.
Someone please explain about the cone and the low water pickup. Is the front of my lower unit the "cone"? and if so what other options are out there. Any pictures of what you guys are talking about? Will changing the cone reduce performance to the point that it is too noticeable? And please define "Tail Lift"

Thanks There are a few fishing flats boats out there that will give the bass boats a run for there money. In 2006 Mike Whittaker set three flats boat records at cresent lake florida in a Lake and Bay flats boat. Class 00460 80.70 MPH- class 00450 73.32 MPH-class 0040 67.79MPH. The Lake and Bay has a step hull a lot like the Gambler. It may be worth your while to contact Marcus at Power Tech
[email protected] he has spent more hours than he will say setting up flats boats. With your boat set up correct you may have something for your brothers bass boat. Joe Raimondo

Well guys, not to burst anyones bubble, but some bay boats have bass boat hulls. They are getting faster and faster every year because of all the new tournaments. I know of a guy that owns a Bluewave Pulse 213 that hit 71 mph with a stock 225 HPDI. Another friend has a Hawk Bay boat that does mid to high 60's. My 21' Fishmaster does 60-61 consistently and I've gotten it to 63 with a 21p tempest.
As all of you know, a boat's attitude will determine it's speed. If he can get more of his boat out of the water in turn it WILL go faster. Depending on where the wetted surface is on the boat now with the configuration he has there could be several things he can do to improve on his set up. Of course there are other things that can factor into it, I think most bay boats out there today are not set up for optimum performance. They are usually pushed out of the dealerships with motors set too low on their transoms with props that are convenient to the dealership.

Is the bay boat a tunnel hull? or is it a v bottom flats boat with a "tunnel" section cut out in the transom? This will change the whole disscussion as far as performance goes.

Talk about some unlikely speed out of fishing boats. This 26' Cruiser does 65.
