alternator belt

I have a stock 98/225 efi merc that keeps throwing belts. The 1st 1 lasted 5 yrs. since then i have gone thru 12 belts. A merc mech. told me to use a tractor belt which also slung. the flywheel and alt. pulley look in line. i get 7-8 trips from 1 belt. any suggestions???
