Hey Greg,
Although I understand your philosophy, I have to ask, if a v-drive is a step back, why is it that the quickest and fastest boats throughout history have always been v-drives? I believe the current record is 4.96sec at 249+ mph in the quarter mile. Don't get me wrong, if there was a way to get 850+ horsepower out of an outboard, and force it through a lower unit with some form of reliability, I would go for it, but currently that means B-Max drive ($30000) or a constantly broken Bravo (even more money). And what do you mean you can't trim a v-drive. That's what cavitation plates are for, and they are quicker and more responsive that any hydraulic trim system. Granted, I would gladly take a mirage with 2.5efi, but thats still $15k or more and you still have to change props depending on what you are doing with the boat that day. The Hallett that I am trying to buy seats 6 people, will take any kind of water that any sensible person would boat in, and currently will run a sub 11sec quarter mile at about 90mph and if allowed to fly will do 107 on gps. As of right now, my financing deal on this boat has fallen through. If any one wants to do some investing, I would pay a pretty good return. I need $9000 Any takers? (Or someone to buy mine and $6000!)

Is with 6000hp not a very good comparison. If that what you want then get it. Wait til the V-drive has a problem and you have to pull that heavy sob out. Wait til the tranny starts to slip and you have to pull that heavy sob out. then when the engine well you get the picture. Let me have an all aluminum outboard and I will be happy. I have seen pictures of your engine puller and I don't think he can handle anything in the Hallet. There is nothing in anyclass that give you the HP to wieght ratio and more bang for your buck than an outboard.

I actually have a chain fall! You are right Greg, hp to weight, yes an outboard takes the cake. But I want overall power, and a 2.5L v-6 can't touch an 8+ liter Chevy v-8. Besides, there is a certain feeling that goes with owning and driving a v-drive boat, and I am just not getting that pleasure from my outboard!:D

Outboards are great and I love mine but, there is nothing like a Bigblock hammering. Ray Leach's Paul Phaff powered HTM beats down the walls and even his Monty powered drag boat doesn't compare when your pulling up to the beach.

I have a Mirage with a 2.5. I would love to try a V-drive just to see what it is all about. Go for it. I like them all.

If you don't like it, you can always try something else.

You know what I'm going to say. I love my v-drive. I've owned a bunch of them through out the years.
If you want a boat that will track like it's on rails and you can sock unreal HP to it it's the only way to go.
As far as Gregs comments about then breaking and being heavy. Well you can lift a Casale v-drive by your self very easy. They don't weigh 100 pounds. But unless you're painting the inside of your boat you won't have to. They don't break. But you can change the gear ratios in about 15 minuits with the v-drive in the boat. I run a 48% grear in my cruiser so it gets great fuel ecomomy.
I ran Lenco trasmissions in my flats and they were pretty light too. The day cruiser that I have now has a T-400 in it and you would need a hand with that to R&R. But it's no big deal.

Don't think I'm an outboard hater. I like all boats of every shape and form.

If you go the v-drive route and need any help with set ups or parts just let me know and I might be able to help.

I loved this boat. Hated to let her go but needed the space for the new one.

My daycruiser that I'm working on now is an ex ski race boat. It's the same hull as this one. 20' Schiada The boat in that pic will run 100+ for a 50 mile race. Toss a back seat in and it's a hellava lake steed :)

Hotboat.net's Infomaniac's blown alki Couger v-drive tunnel. It's a lake boat that has never seen the drag strip. It runs over 130 with a soft tun up.
