I finally got around to testing the D300 with the Nikkor 70-200 the other day. Initial impressions:
The D300 is a bit slower at acquisition than the D200/D2xs, however, once it locks on, the D300's autofocus can track moving objects better than the D200/D2xs.
The 51-point AF is great. At F2.8, all points are very reactive.
The D300 meters a bit "hot" by default. Of course, this isn't an issue if you shoot in manual mode.
The D200 and D2xs image quality is superior to the D300 at lower ISO. At high ISO, the D300 blows them both out of the water.
The D300's battery life is improved over the D200. With the EN-EL4, the D300 will last as long as a D2xs, which is about a full day of shooting, non-stop.Chuck (track director) and his son:

The D300 blows away the D2xs and D200 in terms high ISO image noise and detail. No comparison. I did not shoot RAW yet - I have Photoshop CS3 on its way here, which will give me RAW support (been using Photoshop CS). I have Capture NX, but never installed it yet.

I made some changes to the camera which should bring its image quality up to that of the D2xs at lower ISO. We'll see...

go to bibbelabs and try the same for 30 days. i like it better than all othes in that you can individually do the correct/changes ant then do a batch concert using those individual changes. the others batch but not with individual correction. i believe its about $ 120 today. it also has an noise reduction built in.

Hey Shaun, all is well here - just been very busy (as usual). How have you been? It's great to see you posting :)

No love lost on DPReview for me. Most of those people aren't photographers - they are gadgeteers. It's threads like this (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1034&thread=26566813) - which make up the bulk of that forum - that really kill the place. If you disagree with people, well, you know what happens there. LOL!

Hi Yousif, how are you? I hope all has been well with you, and I'm glad to see you posting.

The D3 is really awesome - especially for low-light, high ISO applications. Full frame is not important, or needed for what I do, so the D3 is not essential to me. If you like true wide angle photography, of if you shoot indoor sports, then the D3 would be perfect.

I think the white Nikkors are nice lenses - are you unhappy with the Sigma?

Greg
