View Full Version : Help guys (?) on 175hp. Mariner
With the numbers on this motor can some one tell me what year it is.Its a 175hp.Mariner #(5580346) I would like to know if its a  (2.0L) or a (2.4L) and is this motor called a (XR-6) and if the gearcase is also a (XR-6) and if its a 1.78 gear ratio??? Thx...:D ;) :p
An XR6 is a 2.5. The XR6 gearcase is small diameter. That # didn't translate to Midas. Get serial number off clamp bracket. As long as it hasn't been changed that will get you some info.

Look at Port side block : 2.4 left & 2.5 right :
Thx.Rock for your time and input. That answered my (?) about the XR6.I still need to know If its a (2.0L) or a (2.4L) and the year.As for getting the serial number off the clamp I did.The numbers are #(5580346) this motor is from the 80's to mid 80's Thx.
Thx.FrenchPhil.I know its not a (2.5L) Its either a (2.0L)or (2.4L)...
As best I can tell there were only 2 175 models that the serial # did NOT start with oc, og, od, etc. The V-1750 goes from 4301235 thru oc****** and the V-175 goes from 5190663 thru oc******. The V1750 was the first 175 back in the late 70's and the V175 was the next model after that, I think. That still doesn't tell you if it's a 2.0 or 2.4. Most serial numbers entered into Midas will yeild results. Did the number you posted come off a tag on the clamp bracket? I ran that number a second time and unless I have some sort of glitch it is not a serial number.

has it ever been apart?? heads changed??? the older 2 piece heads have the measurements of the bore on them. the 2.0 has 3 1/8 on them and 2.4 has 3 3/8 on them. anybody could have changed them though over the years.
check the SN# where the block and the front half meets behind the timing linkage. also there could be a date on the block just to the right of that to tell you the month/ day / year it was borned..

Hey Rock whats up.The numbers I posted came off a tag that was on the clamp bracket.I think the motor is a 1981 I bought a power head gasket. And I gave them my old one and they gave me a gasket for a 1981 But I still dont know if its a (2.0L) or (2.4)Thx..
Hey Roy Thx...For your info.I dont know if its ever been apart. It has the older 2 piece heads but no measurement on them. The head that goes on the block the 1st. piece has for nombers #79714 The 2nd.piece that are diamond shaped has for numbers #1026-7261 As for checking for the SN# where the block and the front half meets behind the timing linkage.I knew about that I just cant make out the numbers to well. The 1st.set of numbers I can see good #7 6 9 The 2nd.set not so hot#01681 The 0 and the 8 I cant see to good I think that what it is not to sure.Thx..
Check the heads. RWR is correct on the 3 1/8 and 3 3/8 cast into the heads. An 81 would likely be a V175 and the number you posted definitely falls into that range. Why the disk wouldn't give me that info is beyond me. Good luck.

Checked my files, probably a 2.0 from the first 175 vertical reed block, from '76 up, considering serial # (4301235-6618571).
