Hey to all, the FWC has released the videos of Joe's crash to us and Joe asked me to post them. The first 3 are from the surveilance cameras at the house on the river. the last one is from the sherrff's helicopter that arrived on scene. I will also be posting still pictures of the crash shortly.
Joe wanted me to tell everyone THANK YOU! for all the help and support.

Glad Joe is here to watch it, it was good to see him at river ranch, Matt
For those of us that missed this whole event could you refresh the details
cause I can`t make out a lot from the vids. Very big of him to want us to have a take away in the interest of safety.

Good job guys. Glad to hear Joe is OK.
I just got done with a PADI rescue diver class and watching this footage, I see it may some day carry over to high performance pleasure boating.
Good job to the first guy on scene there...didn't leave his boat to help. That's the best choice if possible.

We got 16 or 17 boats on the shore of the river, must be some sort of racing situation or something....
I hope joe is making a full recovery. I also hope the authorities in the end were happy with the safety precautions taken by those attending and the quick actions to report the accident as well as work with the authorities.

Unfortunately, history shows the "authorities" don't look at it that way....they see it as there needing to be more restrictive laws.
The response time to this accident by the fellow boaters was extremely fast and no doubt saved Joe's life. The safety equipment definately played a huge role as did the incredible amount of common sense did. Hopefully the "authorities" will see this and not push for more restrictive laws.

Too much boat traffic for me. Also to narrow a canal to run wide open in.
Good job to the first guy on scene there...didn't leave his boat to help. That's the best choice if possible.
Actually Keith, there were two people in the first boat to the scene; euro scott who was making a pass the other direction at the time, and he had Sarge, Hogg's friend with him. as Scott slowed, Sarge dove over and pulled Joe up. Split second action in an event where seconds really mattered.
BTW, I spoke with Joe yesterday and he is doing well. He is close too getting off the steroids, and otherwise feeling pretty good... just looking forward to getting back on the water more often. He wanted me to pass along his thanks to everyone and best wishes during the holidays.

I'm not real sure what you mean by this. All the boats that where not running ,where sitting on the beach . The river there is at least 100 yrd. wide, with a natural bank .All the boat traffic you see from the helicotor is after the fact ,not while we are running . Rich Martin 018:confused:

Wow , I always thought that Joe had run up on the wake from the other two Allisons . Looking at these videos ,I see that's not what happened . Look at the second Allison get caught by a gust of wind at the same time Joe is going over . We never felt the wind blowing from the beach on the other side of the river ,along the tree line. Rich Martin 018:eek:
dunno rich, two air entrapment boats did ok, and an old heavier, non-air entrapment hull that was going not as fast goes over by a gust of wind while near the beginning of the run, not at the end where there could be some speed (I think he was running a 30 or 32 et)? Guess wind is a good a guess as anything, and it looked like they were heading into it, just hard to imagine just wind did that without something else contributing.
Just glad he is getting back to his old self and the good lord was watching over him that day.

large vids are much easier to see,, i just cant stop thinking that some mechanical or structural problem was a major part of what caused joe to go over.i cant count how many times i have seen & radared joe ..in the baja running 100 + .. as far back as 1996!! i have some 8 mm videos ,boat always ran FLAT ON THE KEEL at 85 & up , as far as joes ability ,,well goes without saying ,but just goes to show all of us that anything can happen ,to any one , at any time
euro scott
12-27-2007, 07:41 PM
after reviewing several angles it appears at about 15 seconds into video number one, you can clearly see the 2 outer wakes that he went thru, also it was a slight right bend in the river there and i think the driver of the closest boat knowing he was over his shoulder turned kinda sharp giving the appearance of a gust of wind which may have been part of the equation as it might have generated a bigger wake from the manuever, also wind speed can be seen in the palms and doesnt look any more than negligable

I watched part of the 1st vidio and just saw a bunch of boats playing around. I saw the crash on the second posting. The canal must be wider than it looks on vidio. I guess I am just parinoid about runing in canals after during a bat turn in my 03 over 80 when I 1st got it and almost puting it on the bank and that was in the intercoastal in crownpoint.

the second Allison was looking pretty out of control when it went by...
That's what I'm looking at . That and the flags are streched out pretty well . If you notice the bushes and the hammic start moving around also .As far as tunnels vs V bottoms with a cross wind or head wind,I'll take the tunnel . Keep in mind that Joe's boat is 5 ft. shorter then the Allison . Anyway I'd much rather beleive it was Mother Nature that caused this ,then Driver Error (miss judged a boat wake) as Joe is one of the most experianced drivers I know . Rich Martin 018:cool:
Capt.Insane-o
12-28-2007, 01:08 PM
Side winds upset a v bottom much more than a tunnel. especially a gust quartering from the front. I winged a Viper over in such a manner a few years ago from a cross gust, there was pretty much no warning, I felt the puff in the cockpit and then I was sitting in the water staring at at the boat 50 yards away. It may appear he was a bit happy on the trim too just before it picked up but hard to tell. That was a short Baja with a V-6?.
I am with ya, Joe is VERY experienced. Add to it that he has had that boat since new (over 30 years), he knew that boat like that back of his hand. That is another reason I keep wondering if his trim stuck. guess we will never know, but it will be good to see him back on the water doing what he truly loves.

Fish, wouldn't the motor angle be in the same position when it was recovered?
Fish, wouldn't the motor angle be in the same position when it was recovered?
the motor was immediately torn down and pickled by Andy and I think brad. It was also dragged by FWC since they would not allow us to pull it off the bottom.
Capt.Doug Metko
12-29-2007, 10:03 AM
Joe's memory of the accident is sketchy but he is questioning a trim failure. He has a Bob's machine trim pump in the boat which reacts quicker than a stocker so any glitch could cause bad things to happen faster. He is looking at the trim now to see if he can find a problem and I'll pass that along for him. He wants this info out there so it can help prevent another accident. He also wanted to tell everyone that the life vest saved his life and that it should serve as a lesson to all. He told me that if his accident will help prevent others that it will make his recovery seem alot easier...
Capt.Doug Metko
12-29-2007, 10:25 AM
When Andy looked at the trim angle he did not see anything unusual, but it had been drug around durring the recovery and investigation.
The investigation result from FWC was a blowover.
The wind had to be a factor plus possible wave/wake action that we don't see on the video. The boat was striped inside and fairly light in the bow. Now add the fast trim and possible failure......

When we went to the salvage yard to get the boat, it had been dragged up the bank and onto a flat bed truck then dumped into a dirt lot....skeg was broken and the boat looked like they rolled it all the way there. It was hard to tell the motor angle was from the crash or from the recovery. The transom was broken to boot. As far as Joe wanting to go fast in a boat again, well that's just Joe. Its his passion and if hes well enough to do it hes going to do it. I missed him this year at thanksgiving we always went out early to Lake Tarpon for a couple of hours to get a fix before we ate. Thanksgiving day was kinda boring this year. Hopefully we can continue the tradition next year.:D
