How would a Cleaver run on a Hydrostream? I have a 1980 Hydrostream Viking with a 1981 150 johnson bolted on a land and sea jackplate (2 1/2" setback) Would there be any advantage over a Chopper?
I am looking for Max Topend Speed Thanks.

I used to run a 15 x 30 cleaver on a vector before the ET came out.
Very fast!!

Not enough power with 150hp to warant a cleaver, no point in trying one untill you get over 80. Holeshot suffers and doesnt have the bow lift the vking wants at the speed you will be going.
It's not a great all round prop, it's only a top ender realy.
Stick with the chopper or try a cut chopper or ET.
Happy Christmas,
Alan

I run a 14 1/2 by 28 cleaver on a 79 V-King wit a 4 1/2 set back an da boat flys.Runs 99.7 at 8000 rpm,an it still got more.Got plenty of lift an da boat handles great, faster it goes da better it handles.

I wouldn't try a cleaver with that Hp. (don't take this the wrong way), your boats under powered to get anything from a cleaver. Just find a good chopper or an ET. I accually ran a prop off of a 250 Hp yamaha on my V-King with a Bridgeport, and it worked very well, But a 29p spinelli was much better. Good luck.

Anthony SS always ran a cleaver on his 150 Merc powered Hydrostream Vision (a Canadian Edition model).
It was his fastest prop, but that was for running solo. A cleaver might work for you too. Certainly no harm in trying, but I wouldn't start there for buying props.

i would sell the 150 and buy a merc anything above 30 or 40 hp oughta knock off the johnos top end youll be stoked
Any issue with porpousing with your 4 1/2" setback? My V-King has a 6" and porpouses bad, I have tryed all the weight distribution stuff and different props but nothing helps. Someone a while back said the V-Kings like little setback and I should go to a 2 or 4" plate to help? Any thoughts? running a PRO-MAX with a 28 Hydromotive TX-4 know. The prop is smooth and fast but not much bow lift although it got rid of my chine walk alltogether but I can't stay in it becuase of the porpousing, and once it starts it keeps gettig worse and you can't drive through it either.

I run a 150 johnson bolted to the transom with a 27 srx. No problem with porpousing and i can pick the bow so high i cant see over the windshield. The boat handles like a corvette. This year i will be bolting the motor on a land and sea jackplate (2 1/2") setback well see how she handles then.:D

My dad ran an old OMC cleaver in the 70's on his 17 Action w/140 v4 power. It was his fastest top-end prop but the boat handled like crap when the stern would lift.

sorry i didnt read the first post closer. you need to find some 175 omc carbs for that motor. it was the only difference between the motor. porting.... is all the same. the bigger carbs really wake up the motor as well. my 17' vamp gained 10 mph.

I tired everything to stop the bounce on my Vector............nothing worked, but a faster trim pump helped.
I started with 6", took that off, put it on the transom, lost 5 MPH.
Went with an 8" jackplate, and got my best speed, (94.1--- 28 inline chopper), but it took longer to recover from meeting other boats with the extra setback, ( bouce after crossing their wakes).
The best thing I found was not to stay in the bounce range, (40 to 55 MPH), and trim up faster to hold the bow up through the bounce range.
I still liked the 26 Trophy for all around on the stream.
Can't see over the windshield ??, How about can't see over the BOW at all ?

i had mine on a l&s JP but it was a vamp 16 1/2' v hull HS. never any porpousing at all. i did run doel fins so maybe that helped. or maybe the 8" hydraulic after planes [ they were always at neg 5 degrees exept when towing toys.

I think the Vectors were worse about the bounce than the V-Kings.
Joed's V-King didn't have any bounce, but mine right beside him in the 40 to 50 MPH range would bounce its azz off.

Mine is great. It's light, hauls ass, 107, handles great, doesn't bounce. It only is a little ill at 78, if you just sit on that speed. If you blow through 78, you never notice it.
Did somebody say Cleaver?
mmm...

The vector was not designed for a V6, the viking was made in 1978 response to the new V6 outboards. The viking was designed to carry the weight of the V6 better than the vector with added length and different deadrise and etc.

Joed's V-king got its best top speed with a cleaver, (94 MPH)? but it didn't work as good in all the other speeds, turns, take offs etc.
The cleaver in the picture above actually 'rockets' out of the hole from a dead stop, but ventilates like a bitch as soon as the hull lays down on plane, requiring a couple of jabs at the throttle to get it to hook up and stay moving forward. :D
