While I'm redoing boat, I would like to clean up bilge area. I don't have a spray gun but I do have a compressor. I would prefer to brush as it just the bilge but don't want it to look like poop. Has anyone had success with a brush and if so what type of paint should I use. Thanks in advance.

Make sure you clean the surface REAL WELL!! If the surface is shine take a scotch bright pad and lightly scuff it. TL

I used brightside polyurethane in the bilge of the activator. I cleaned it with degreaser, sanded it then denatured alcohol. Came out MINT and still looks good 2 1/2 years later.

Brightside is pretty awesome stuff. I used it to redo a wide stripe on my cruiser 15 years ago and it is still holding very well. Self levelling, easy to apply with brush or roller and no toxicity issues.

Imron/Awlgrip are very toxic as they are cured with isocyanates. There is no better stuff, but be careful. The following is a cut and paste:

Negative points include:

Extreme toxicity. Forced air respirator, skin and eye protection are a MUST. There are NO approved cartridge respirators - the isocyanates are odorless.
10-25% chance of developing chemical induced asthma which is permanent form exposure to the IsoCyanate hardeners
Relatively high "buy in cost" Need appropriate thinners, reducers, hardeners, forced air respirator, HVLP spray gun
Not for the casual user. These are designated as "professional use only" products. In some areas it may be hard to purchase as an amateur. Local dealer started to get worried with my questions. They are very concerned with safety and potential liability. Freely available published info is sketchy. It took a bit of digging to find the links listed. The Dupont information is in a sign-in only area of their web site.

what did you use to paint the floor and interioir of your viper? i know you used the duratech highgloss on the outter hull and deck. correct?

Correct. I used the same inside. Found it was too thin though, if I was to do it again I would use less Duratec.

let me make sure i got ya on this one, duratec is half and half with gel. on the inside you would have used like 3/4 gel and 1/4 duratec?

thanks again

Duratec does two things - it allows the gel to air dry and reduces the orange peel effect when spraying.

If I was going to apply gel with a roller, say in the interior or bilge I would use 10% Duratec or just add air dry additive (wax) to the gel.

thanks riverman.

i know i will have to use the duratec high gloss/gel on the transom and where i glassed over the well. seems it will work good in the bilge area also. i think i will install carpet since i will still have seating for 4 people and it looks nice when all said and done.

Use topcoat...

Cheaper and stronger than paint. 1 layer is enough because you lay it very thick. It fills all the tiny holes of the fibreglass. If you take a screwdriver or a key you cant scratch it off.

I did it like this and would never do it with something else:cool:
