Seem to be a lot of smart people here who know a thing or two about "mother merecury" and her marketing schmes...
I have a 31 ft fountain that I am repowering with dual opti something. The 225 opti is the cheapest but does it run on 87 gas and offer features like engine overlimite etc? It is also only 2 star emision. The 250 opti is 3 star and the specs show overlimit..etc...but probably burns more gas than the 225 opti.

The 225xs has a different gearcase than reg opti 225 and a little more balls but it it worth the extra cost and does it do 87 oct?

I am mainly using boat for offshore fishing in atlantic. Anyone that could help offer additional info I would be greatful. I have seen some 250xs that I might be able pick up slightly higher than regular 225 opti and I am wondering if the extr $$ was worth it for my application?

The bigger opti you go, the better.
You are correct that the opti is the best platform for that boat.

The 250 xs's burn 87 octane as of 2006, and they are the best powerplant for the 31.

With 225 opti's the 31 runs 60-62 mph
with 250 opti's it runs 66-68 mph.

Fuel economy is about the same for both, just a faster cruise with the 250's

Had a set of 99 250 EFIs previously...they lierally screemed but burned a hole in my pocket. They were 25' and the port motor broke loose occationally and cavitated a lot in off shore swells. I was wondering if 30's where better?

30" shafts are not an option for the 31.

What props were you running, I bet some 4 blades(bravos) would have solved your problem.

Heck, I ran twin 25" Sportmasters on a 34' Fountain, and they held better psi than my previous 30" fleetmasters.
there were no issues with blow out

I was running a 3 blade, i think either a 21p or 24p cant remember which. I could turn 56k wot so it was proped right. It really used to blow out on my alot though. Does a 4 blade make that much a diff? I realize we could have a prop discusion for hrs, i am just trying to figure out what I put on my new optis.

I just did a repower of a 31 from 200 carbs to 225 Optis. Went from 57 to 61 at WOT with a nice cruise of 50 at 4700 burning 26 gph total (light in a 1' chop). I switched my boat recently from 225s to the new 250s (non-XS) and the difference in midrange and hole shot is incredible. I picked up 4 mph on the top-end and burn 4 gph more (23 vs. 21) so MPG stays the same. All of the Optis produced today have the same engine monitoring and burn 87 octane with the exception of the 300. Props will also make all the difference on the 31, Bravos or Tempests will work the best and I recommend a 22p Bravo if you go with 225s.

The boat still has he sundance marine logo on it from when it was bought....You did all the warrentee work on the motors...Want em back?? ha! Thanks for the info. When you say non-xs 250's I assume it is the 250 version of the 225 opti?

That's funny, we sold a bunch of those 31s, they were an awesome running boat! Just for craps and giggles, I may be interested in the old motors if they still run, what are they? Non-XS 250s would be a 250 version of the standard 225, that is correct. I still recommend a standard 225/250 Opti as the power of choice for the 31, hard to beat the warranty and performance of that package plus they are cheaper. Also, the Pro XS versions are not available in left hand rotation.

I am pretty sure I sold them on line to a guy here, he is building a killer rig with quad 250 EFIs!!! talk about scream and fly....I am going with the std 225's opti dont need the top end from the 250s optis and they (225) are cheaper than the 250. I saw a bunch of low hr used online but figured they had **** beaten out of them by SKA guys so i decided I am going new...ouch!!! Maybe I can find a guy who bought some and changes his mind before putting on boat and now needs to get rid of them....right...

Next question is the props, mech thinks if I plug my 23p laser II's vents it wont blow out as much (always had blow outs in the port CX engine on rollers). The quest continues...

22 bravos! and run'em high. If they are vented; the 31 might plane on 1 opti.

4 blades will solve your blow out issue

PB,
You are the second person to say set em high.the guy I just sold my 250 EFIs to even thought I might try 20'...a little extreme but I bet I am on the highest bolt holes on the 25' and the water pick up on the bullet should help keep her cool...Interesting you mention the plane on 1 opti, I had a problem and lost my port motor and couldnt get over 10 knots..I was confused that a boat that light couldnt get up with a 250 efi...Explains alot..4 blades here i come!!!
