Also owned a 2.5xs --- biggest disapointment I have ever had with any motor. Your right it would be nice to know for sure. Liked the 200xs ss love my 280 ros and hated the 2.5xs. All motors were new and powered either my Hydrostream v-king or my SRV. But I don't know the exact hp. There is no way the 2.5xs is 245 hp from my experience.

Sure like to know what it was that you didn't like about the 2.5xs.

I owned the 2004 200xs ss first and got use to its performance and fuel mileage. When comparing the 2005 2.5xs to it, I did not fine much more performance and did notice the fuel economy was not nearly as good. Even when allowing for different set-ups. Also I was told that the 2.5xs was 240hp at the prop and there is no way that could be true. And the thing looks big and ugly with the 3 litre mid on it. It reminds me of a motor that Merc had too many parts in their inventory and designed a motor in which to use them up. Also I had read the 2.5xs test here (on the Euro) and perhaps my expectations were too high.

The one thing the 2.5xs allowed for was ease of spark plug removal---the 200xs is a pain to get at them. Maybe there was something lacking in my 2.5xs but I sold it and moved on. The guy I sold it to run it for 2 hours and it threw a rod. But thats what happens when you force feed them water.
