I finally killed my yammie 115..... After 575 hours which included a very slow learning curve (my first 2 stroke and my first outboard), many mods including 155 psi compression, leaning it out numerous times due to various mistakes on my behalf, and most of its life pushing a 2800lb rig at 6k+ it has finally kicked the bucket. I was out fishing the docklights tonight and it started knocking. luckily I made it home and didn't have to wake any friends/relatives up for a tow. idled for about 2 miles back to my dock, with that constant high pitched TAP, TAP, TAP, TAP, TAP........ I guess I can't complain as this little motor has NEVER required a tow but has towed dozens of other boats, including a recent 30mph tow of my neighbor's Skeeter for 6 miles, lol....

over the next few days I'll conduct the autopsy and determine what exactly happened. I'm sure it has something to do with me running it out of fuel Friday night....damn fuel sender!!!

I guess it's time to drop on the 175 powerhead that is currently on my 19' bullet project boat. port and rebuild the v4 and hopefully get the bullet into the high 60's/low 70's with a v4.

I always wanted a v6 on my center console but damn, this isn't the way I wanted to go about it.....

Keep the V-6 on the Bullet and have some fun. THe little V-4 it probably completely resurrectable with a few parts. The Yamaha's don't self destruct quite as bad as teh Mercree's in most cases. Hopefully the crank is OK. I have a good supply of Excel parts if you need anything for the V-6.

Mike, I have my original 115 power head(135 HRS) in the garage I have done the exhaust ports the same exact way that my block IM running is. The cranks good, I was going to bearing and ring it. If you need it we can work something out. Joe R

I came home for lunch and finally pulled the plugs. no signs of aluminum and piston tops didn't look bad. However whenever #1 gets near tdc there is a bind. this evening I'll pull it out of the water so I can pull the power head. seems like a bearing issue.

russ, the bullet is a long term project- gotta do some floor work due to soft spots, rewire/rig, etc. basically a total overhaul. it's a mid 80's, I believe an 86 19' bassboat. I'm still debating on how to get my center console back in action. dropping on the 175 powerhead is going to be the cheapest route since I already have a tuner, gaskets, etc. winter is my favorite time of year for striper/hybrid fishing.

Joe, thanks again for the help. I'll keep you up to date on the v4's status. it's going to get a healthy dose of grinding prior to reassembly.....

I pulled the heads today and found a broken piston top on #1. piston top doesn't appear to show detonation so I'm at a loss in trying to figure out what happened. Here's a pic of the piston.

Any ideas as to what could have caused this?

Over the next week or so I'll tear the motor down and start grinding on the block/adapter/etc to port match all mating surfaces. the sleeves aren't matched to the block very well so I plan to clean that up a bit. Do any of the yamaha guys have recommendations for increasing port dimensions? I was thinking about using a 220 special block as a guide and matching intake/exhaust ports to the 220 special specs. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

thanks!
