Last year was the first year they shut down Speed Alley - now idle zone. The location changed to a bit down river, and some people had problems getting there (distance, etc). We ended up heading back up river to the sandbar. It was still a good time, but hopefully we can find a place more conducive for the masses. :)

I gave up spankin BB's when a local guy ran mid 150's in a single bb/io. That's 20-40 mph faster than any ob (single/dual/trip) that I've seen. Imagine going a buck and a quarter and some dude runs by you by over 30 mph. Humility is a wonderful thing.

There is always someone faster out there...comes down to the pocketbook...but this event is an excuse for the OB guys to get together at a West Coast venue. We're definitely in the minority out here, not like back East. :)

STV_Keith

The spot will probably NOT be announced. I believe we are planning to meet at Nautical Cove and go "somewhere" from there. Don't need johnny law shutting down anymore of the lake. Just watch the boards for when/where we are going to meet up.

Why did they shut down speed ally?

DB

STV_Keith
01-15-2008, 05:08 PM
I'm sure the fact that the performance boaters went in there was a part of it...which is why the LE's used to sit at the end of the alley and lie in wait.

They marked it off as a "sanctuary", but we know the real reason.

Propster
01-15-2008, 06:32 PM
Actually, the cops liked the idea of the fast boats playing in speed alley, because it got them off the main part of the lake. Boat Cop said it got shut down because of problems with the jet skiers.

Mid 150s in a single I/O?
Would love to see some pics/video
suppose it did it in less then 1000 feet too:rolleyes:
Just FYI,Mike Dixon ran 150+ in a single outboard lakeable ModVp tunnel and i would bet he did it alot cheaper (and shorter distance) then that I/O

Hey, I'm a ob guy and you can't beat the bang for the buck. That being said, the boat in question is a 26 (26'11') Eliminator Daytona w/ #6 drive. I don't know the guy that well but I assume large displacement (572?, bigger?) and the grapevine says alchohol too w/ mega blower. Anyway, the mid 150's is legit. The rig won the Shooters Shootout in the Ozarks (which I know nothing about) several years in a row in its class. Racers come from all over the U.S. for that event. I doubt these type of guys care about 1000' or the quarter. Only one number counts and that's topend. I would advise any ob to not race an all white 26 daytona w/ large hood scoop. Very cool, but I'll take my Allison or an STV, Stream, etc.

Wasn't that the guy that posted on hot boat a lot? I think his post name on Hot Boat was Rock Hard or something. If it is the same guy, he did not just put it together and make a pass. Oh no, he blew that thing up a lot. He went through lots of drives (Bravos, B-Max's, IMCO's, then #6 drive) and motors, and set up time before he finally made his goal. Even then, I don't think it would have stayed together long running that much horsepower. If he was running alcohol, that would be a pain to get fuel on the lake.

I think he said he had over $150,000 in that boat and could not wait to dump it after he met his goal (for a lot less). Speed costs money (and time, and heartbreak) how much do you got?

Outboards still rule for speed and reliability.

Rc--very nice looking stv.

Propster & STV Keith--
I don't know about posts or set-ups. That rig had a 6 drive from the git-go, I think. He's from Grimes, IA (greater Des Moines). Any speed like that with a single requires lots-o-set-up. He builds his own motors. I would not doubt the $150,000. What's that to the Hot Boat crowd?

I agree, for mph/$ and reliability, outboards rule. I remember my full weight STV Pro Comp and 2.4 BP carb. A reliable century+ mark every time out. Less than $12,500 in the day, new rig, $1.50 fuel.--Pleasant memories. I blew that BP up after 14 months. Merc stood behind it. Is that cool or what? The replacement ran forever.

Guess it wasn't the same boat, the guy I was thinking of with the #6 drive and big hp Daytona was a West Coast guy. He was running right at 150. There was another guy that had a big hp 24 HTM that was running a little over 144, but he was killed in the first 31 HTM during testing (along with the owner of HTM and the engine mechanic).

What I was getting at is that most high HP car motors lifetimes can be measured in minutes at max hp. Most OB's can run wide open for hundreds of hours if kept within the factory rpm range and are fed enough fuel.

My wife says I am good to go to this little shin-dig! Now, I've never met any of you guys (or gals!) but would love the opportunity to get to meet the folks from the board out on the water. I don't have anything fancy to play with (1993 open bow 19' Eliminator with a 175 Merc on the back) but would like to come out and play!

I'm not all that familiar with Havasu (grew up going to Mohave) and I know that the location has yet to be determined, but if I could be put on the "Invite List" that would be great. I'm looking to make a boy's weekend out of it with my bro-in-law, while we leave the ladies at home with the kids.

I know it's early but wanted to throw my hat in the ring as I am looking forward to getting back out on the water after way to many years without a boat! So how do I find out where you guys and gals are going to be that weekend? Like I said, I'm not all that familiar with the lake, but would like to be on the list when the announcement goes out. Thanks in advance!

I'd imagine you plan to launch either at Site 6 (if you are experienced with launching & retrieving your boat) or Windsor. Either way, it's only a few miles to the Bridgewater Channel from there.

I believe the current plan is to meet in the channel on Friday and Saturday. Times/exact places haven't been determined yet. Here's a simple map of the area with some GPS points. KOKOMO's is also the location of the channel if you're not familiar.

Thanks for the info STV Keith. I have been thinking about picking up an inexpensive GPS unit for use out on the lake. This gives me the excuse I needed to pick one up. What seems to be the most popular unit out on the water? I was thinking something along the lines of Garmins eTrex Venture HC. For just over $125 it looks like it would do the trick. Suggestions?

STV_Keith
01-22-2008, 11:09 AM
I'm not really up on the current cheaper models. Personally, I run a Garmin GPS V in my STV. It's an older unit that was $600 back in the day. You can probably find them for around $200 or less now.

It's my goal to be there. Just need to finish my boat. I'm in the process of painting it. Way more work than I thought. I have the Front seats painted, the back seat/sun deck painted (Met Orion Silver), side console painted Met (Orion Silver), GPS antenna painted(Met Orion Silver), exhaust adaptor plate painted (Met Galaxy Grey), Off shore Mid painted (Met Galaxy Grey), all the freshly painted seats are at the upholster's getting redone right now(silver and grey w/orange piping), my injectors at at Tony's right now getting checked, all of my props are in getting tuned up now, I should have all my gauges back from Livorsi tomorrow from being changed from white/white to Platinum/Platinum with all new red indicators, I'll be ordering my Hydraulic steering as soon as I make my mind up on which way to go (hopefully in the next day or two, can't decide between Sea Star Pro or Imco, I'm thinking Sea Star Pro and enlargening the lillar arm bolt to 1/2 inch with a good bolt)

I welded together a dolly which my boat is on now. I've already flipped it and it's ready to be sanded. Have not started yet because I want to get my engine cover done first. I should have it done in a few days then I can get the bottom of my boat painted (Met Orion Silver) and flip the sucker back on it's right side so I can start on the top. Once I get the silver base done I'm going to do Pearl Purple, and Pearl fire orange graphics before the clear goes on. Not sure how I'm going to do the graphics yet. I'm just going to start rolling tape on it and see what looks good.

It will be close, but I think I can pull it off.

Hope to see you all out there!

Anyone know if Maureen is going to make it back out this year?

Keith,

That's a bummer. It would be good to see her again so I can get some tips on taking some pix.

Anyway, yes, you are correct, lots of work. I wish i would have started a month sooner. Oh, well. It's been a great learning experience, that's for sure. The bottom of the boat will go real fast. However, the top will take way longer. I'm planning on getting rid of both the holes in the back where the fuel fill/steering cable openings are. That problem is that they both are raised above the top of the boat and radiused. So, I am going to have some glass work to do. I've been getting good at it though.

After I completely de-rigged the boat I took it down to the guy in town who happens to do all the work for DCB, Kevin @ KM Graphics. He's a great guy. I had him go double duty in strength on the back of my boat including the transom. Last year after I installed the support brackets inside on the knees (just like yours) it moved the stress point up towards the top which caused some stress cracks. Thankfully they were only cosmetic. But, I certainly didn't want them showing up after a new paint job. So, he added about 3/8" of glass on the entire back deck and transome while adding some more to where he thought the stress points could be. So, hopefully I won't see any wear and tear on the new paint back there. It would be a bummer. Have you had any sign of anything since you re-did yours?

Looks like a lot more boats are committing to coming this year. Should be a MUCH better turn out. Not to mention, it's already in the high-80s and low 90s in Havasu - much nicer than the 50-60 degree temps last year.

I was out there at Havasu this weekend. I showed up at the "location" at 9:30 but didn't see a single boat on the beach. I did, however, unfortunately see the helicopter rescue divers pull a body out of the water at the proposed meeting place. Very sad to have to see those kinds of resources in action.

On a lighter note... I hope that everyone that made it out had a great time. This being my first time out on Havasu, I was able to find the very large sandbar just north of the island. Good times!

Friday was great weather, while Saturday was just a "little" windy, LOL... If you guys and gals are putting together another get together this year, I would love to hear about it! Hope everyone had a good time, hope to meet up with you soon!
