After 300 miles of racing - the winner is

http://airmasterstab.com/Lib.jpg

A 1987 Liberator with a 2.0 Merc with one 100 mile session driven by a name Ya'll might remember.

Havasu Barney.

Must have been a well built boat to have lasted 300 miles is some really rough water after 20 years of boating abuse.

Congradulation to Barney and the others on the winning crew.

Different race than the old enduro, course was much shorter and boats started in 6 divisions at different times depending on class your rig falls into. Basically the faster they thought your boat would run the later you started and had to make up the difference. They ran very consistent all the way and did a great job.

modest Al doesn't mention that he and Fred Bowden hooked up to drive a red Stoker in the race, pretty neat turnout, a chance this might revive a great get togehter[make it even bigger]Good to see #55 again, just didn't look right not being yellow!!

Watching the videos makes me sick I could not make the race.

I hope the event becomes as big as it used to be. I have been trying to get there for the last two years and it seems somebody is against me, but -

you can be sure the turbine powered Eagle will be on the starting line next year. Ya'll get ready.

He won fair and square with a 55 minute head start????????????

Good job to all that raced. I tried to read about it on another site but the childish bickering was so bad I couldn't stay to read the whole thread.

to try and promote safety.

Not what it used to be but the best we have and still looks like an amazing race!!

The race is still long enough to punish your equipment and break stuff you'd never even think of.

Congrats to Barney and crew and was great hearing Al was back in a boat again.
Maybe with an E-Tec next yr ;)

The handicap start system sure offers the guys with the pleasure boats a chance to take the overall win. Any racing event should be for the enjoyment of the racers and spectators and running it this way will get more people involved if they know you don't need a 100mph boat to do well.

Wow, that is very cool. I did not even know Barney was entering that race. I remember seeing that Liberator completly apart in his storage unit. Looks like he found a good use for it.

I was there supporting Joe and his crew in the 555 boat. They had one hell of a strategy and won! Who would have thought an old Liberator with a 2.0L would have won the race?

I have never met Joe but Barney was quick to say Joe and his planning was the reason they won.

The staggered start and the ability to fit into a nitch certainly leveled the playing field.

I am sure there will be adjustments to the rules next year to close any loopholes.

That hull was the original BarneyCraft. T-Rex & I saw it laying on the ground in Havasu when we went though a couple of years ago. Very cool to see it come back to live as an endurance racer.

Very well done.

The Enduro had staggered starts with two MANDATORY 15MIN max pit stops. There were 6 divisions...Boat 555 was in Division 1 and was turning consistent 68-70MPH speeds in the straights.

Some of the hardware in Div. 6 was incredible! How about a 21' Cyclone dubbed "WarPath," running twin 900hp BBCs....YIKES. He was pulling 120mph+ in the straights! Unfortunately he broke down! OOPS.

It was a fun race until the fuel tank split, having to start 50 minutes behind the first group and play catch up means you run the you know what out of the equipment, to make up that much ground you need to average about 25 mph more than the first flight. Still it was lots of fun after not being in a race boat for 15 years, and rigging it the morning before the race. Thanks Fred for the ride.

Also no matter what division you run the rules regulate things like engine height to keep speeds down, for example division 5 basically the old modvp had to run with the prop shaft 1 inch below the bottom, last year it was 2 inches but that created handling problems for many so the changed that rule, trust me trying to run fast 1 inch down is a challange, even that deep we thru a blade on a brand new propeller.

It sure was fun.

Congrats to Joe and Barney. It was kinda funny seeing the 555 boat getting passed all day long, but still winning the race. Good planning on their part.

There were a couple boats out there that just flat out flew. Hopefully they will keep tweaking the rules to get the classes a little better dialed in. I saw the 55 out there and noticed it hauling the mail, but didn't know who was in it.

They have been making some big improvements to this race, and will hopefully be a race people will drive a longer way to enter.

BTW, I believe warpath has twin blown small blocks.

I read that the radar for the #55 was at 105 to 106 on the straights??? :D Not bad considering the engine height restrictions.

Was the casino not sponsoring it this year, and or, was Ron Hill the organizer? Weren't they calling it the Blue Water 300 the last few years????????

Maybe I'm thinking about a different race?

Ran 105/106 in straights, 3:15 laps and was on a winning course iffffffffffff.....

Not bad considering the boat was an '87 un-rigged hull 24 hrs earlier

Al said he actually got down into the 2:50's and thought there was 10 more
MPH's in the boat if they wre allowed to raise the motor

Amazing to look at all the stuff that broke in a 300 mile race with performance limitis imposed.

Think if it was a 9 hr race again with no rules ;)

I'm not trying to pile on or detract from anyones performance.

Last year Ron Hill's kid won the Blue water 300 (is this the same race with a different name) A month or 2? before the race IIRC Ron was looking for a Baker RST. Someone mentioned that he should get a Stoker. He said he didn't want one because they were too fast. I thought that was an unusual reply but didn't think any more about it. Now I know that he was serious and wanted the Baker for a reason. It would put his kid in a slower class and take advantage of the rule allowing the "slower boat" (with a fast motor in his case?) a head start.

Again, I'm not bashing anyone for taking advantage of the rules. That's expected. Some of the smartest guys figure out the loop holes and use them to their advantage. Barney and crew knew the deal and had a winning plan. Good job!

The classic tortoise and hare race.

That Warpath boat sounds too fast. Ralph Nader would make him stay on the trailer. Only the old farts will get the joke. :D
