OK, time to expose my ignorance of outboard maintenance....
So I got the '76 Black Max on a stand in my garage, and want to paint the lower and mid, and replace graphics on the cowl. Is there any other way to raise and lower it to get to the area in the mid thats covered with the engine fully down, than to hook up the pump?
Speaking of which, since fluid was lost in disconnecting the pump, what is the refilling/bleeding procedure?
Thanks, Bernie

Is it an inline six if so it should have the rams on the side once they are disconnected from the pump you should be able to move it. Allen

Nope, 175 Black Max, one cyl. in middle.
Thx.

it will self bleed when you rehook it up and fill the res., run trim up and down a couple of times,as for now just lift it up and run a rubber hose betweeen the two metal hoses so you dont make a mess

You should be able to just lift it up. The fluid will shoot out cause you are moving the tilt pistons. By the way, on a 76 you should have the tall clamp bracket with the trim lines built in it and 2 trim rams.
Post some pics of your project. I have my first v6 Merc on a stand in my shop too. It too is a 1977 1750 black max.

LR99 and Roostertail, My bad, two cylinders, mounted inside the transom mount...hadn't looked very carefully...
SuperB, great tip! I would have just shot fluid all over the shop if left to my own devices!
Thanks all.

There is no bleeding proceedure. Fill the pump to the line on the dipstick and trim it up/down several times............. that's it. You may have to add fluid again.

Obviously I didn't see it when I ran through the thread the first time.;) That's what happens when my phone rings just as I'm starting on a post, then somebody walks in my office, and an hour later I finish it without refreshing.:o

No offense, but it sounds like you need a manual. :)

If ya put a hose between the two lines, you may have an issue lifting it by hand. The ram will create a vacuum as you lift it since there is more volume below the piston than on top due to the ram. Just run a couple hoses into a bucket to catch the oil.

FC, actually, need to READ the manual I already got...been more interested in rebuilding the hull up to now, winter will put me to work on the engine. It starts and runs good, need to compression test, check timing and charging. I'll refer to the manual for that stuff, as well as installing a nose cone/LWP...
No offense taken. If this were the British bike forum I am active on, that would have been the FIRST reply!
Thanks, Bernie
