inspecting 260 rings

how much can you tell from looking at the rings through the exhaust ports, if you pull the divider plate. i have heard a comp check is useless on a 260. the second ring will carry the #'s. i know a leak down test is good. does the exhaust side of the ring wear a little more than the rest because of the heat.
i know in 20 min you could be looking at them. is it a waste of time. just do a leak down test and call it a day.
any opinions.

I'd opt for a leak down test results... The Merc gold ring is concaved and when fresh will wear a slight ring from the middle ans asit weras futher the fine line will grow large until it is the full face width of the ring. If this is allowed to wear to that point the ring can and will damage the Nic/nicom bore coatings...
