I saw an ad that I think is a misprint. Owner said engine was a 1980 225HP?
My guess is probably 10 years newer.
2.4 or 2.5?

My guess would be 86 or 87 2.4 with the clam shell cowl. I don't think it would be a 2.5.

was there a 225hp 2.4 liter?
thanks...I didn't recognize the clamshell cowl at first.

There was in 1983 I think. I think Mercree then made a front case jhalf change back to a 5/10 petal and called the same motor the 200. If that is indeed a 1983 200/225 that has not been sleeved it could be a very good motor. Those 1983 200's had a bitt better porting than the later models.
That's an older Glastron Ski Machine and they changed those boats up in the mid 80's and that one is an early model.

thanks Russ. This guy want's $1900 for the whole thing, trailer and all. All I want is the motor if it's worthwhile. He claims it starts almost instantly.

merc made a '80-'81 225. 2.4L 7 peddle non figerported motor - good engine. would have the "old" style head bolt pattern with the head bolts on the cylinders. that cowl, however, is a later 2.4 as shooter said.

Ummm, well, no. The Early V6's head bolts threaded into a hole that was cast into the clyinder - merc changed that in '82 and placed the holes out further, cast to the block. (this is kinda hard to explain without having two blocks to show the difference). All im sayin is that if it an early motor (which there is nothing wrong with) your cylinder head selection will be limited to 1981 and earlier.

If you could get the ser# off of the welch plug we can probably narrow it down a little farther. I have a 175hp verticle reed motor converted to a 200 EFI in a 150 XR4 cowl. So looks can be deceiving. Go off the plug and not the mid.

Instead of the head bolts being at the edge of the block they were moved inward around the bores... IMO more likehood of blowing head gaskets when high compression heads were added..
good luck,
