View Full Version : BMX crash - three broken ribs
Scream And Fly
09-02-2007, 02:24 PM
Had a bad crash in Naples at a district race last Saturday (12 feet, right onto hard clay). I thought I had some bruised ribs, but then I started feeling something moving inside my chest. Not good, right? Went in for X-ray and they found one broken rib, then later on the radiologist identified two more broken ribs. The pain is something I can deal with - what bothers me most is that I can feel the broken ribs moving and "thumping" inside my chest when I move around. That will teach me, right? No way - as soon as I can, I'm getting on that track again. :D
I am out of commission for the next two months. :(:(:(

Sorry to hear about that but I can't say I'm surprised. Rest up and leave the Tabletop jumps for the little rubber people like Stokernick's grandsons. Ribs take a long time to heal so it's a good thing you have endless supplies of Computer related entertainment :D

Some of the stuff I see those guys on BMX racing do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Glad it's only ribs and nothing else. Back when I was 17, I had 4 broken ribs( got my ass kicked by 6 guys:o ) took alot longer then 2 month to heal. So 2 months is great. I am sure the web-site can keep you busy.;) Chuck

Tie a rope above your bed (the eye hooks should already be there;) ) And pull yourself up every morning. I've had that break and it seemed to feel like I was rebreaking the things every morning until I put a rope up there. After that I could be "comfortable" all day.

I bruised my ribs once at it felt like I had been shot by a 45.
It took over 5 years before they did not hurt everytime I bumped them.
The one thing I have found: Old Age is just the accumulation on all of the injuries we aquire in our crazy years!
Take it easy and get well soon.

I rode the sled 18 miles home in a lot of pain. All is better now, but man, as I get older, I definitely don't heal as fast! Later, Dave

I took the lid from a sour cream/cottage cheese container, and cut a strip out of the center leaving the lip on one end. The lip would wrap over the frame tube nicely to keep it in place, the plastic had a much longer lifespan and better sound....lol. But shortly I got into BMX and that was that.

Hey,thats good news.Do you wear a chest protector when you race or is it too restrictive? You could wrap up the first race.Might keep you from tweeking them a little. The thing I notice watching is the chance of getting collected by somebody else happens about 95% of the time.Thats part of it though.Like an old friend said " If your gonna be dumb you've got ot be tough"

Hey,thats good news.Do you wear a chest protector when you race or is it too restrictive?
No chest protector, but I may start. They do make BMX-specific protectors. Not 100% sure about it though. I already started training again for racing, but I still can't go on the track. I'm racing at the Grand Nationals next year for sure. Right now I'm ranked 69th, which isn't bad, which isn't bad for just getting back into it. I have a lot of ground to gain though.
I race against the 11th ranked rider all the time (he's a Naples local), and he gets me by only a bike length, so I'm dropping my gear ratio one tooth on the front chainwheel so I can get him out of the gate. I also made the decision to go clipped in, which may increase my chances for injury, but it will definitely help with the tabletops. I would rather jump them than manual through it.

For serious stuff, I ride a GT i-Drive 5 2.0 and a Trek 6700 (for the road). Also, I'm actually having a custom made BMX frame and fork being fabricated to my specifications. That should be here in a few weeks.

I detest getting any air with my mountain bike because it feels so unsafe/incapable compared to a BMX bike. I can see why people get hurt so much on mountain bikes...all they are is a road bike with knobby tires. Mine is even a 24", the smallest I can just fit on and still sort of properly ride distance.

You kidding, mountain bikes (24 or 26 inch) or BMX cruiser (24 inch) are extremely stable on jumps. To say that mountain bikes are road bikes with knobby tires is to completely miss the point. Mountain bike frame geometry is much, much different than road bike frames. I'm talking about the good bikes - not the Walmart ones. :)

I have to agree with you 100% Greg. As far as frame geometry the two road/mountain are completly diffrent. Also jumping a mountain bike is a dream, especially with dual suspension, it's like landing on a cloud and I also feel they have a nice balance to them if they are a quality bike.
I ride a Specialized FSR XC. I love this bike and have and still am adding upgrades all the time. It was perfect from new but you know how it is. I'm also thinking of adding a Specialized Epic Comp to the stable but can't believe it would make me much happier than the FSR.
If you were still living in Long Island I would try to hook up with you for a few hours of riding.

Those are really nice rides. New York is a great state to be in if you love mountain biking. I've ridden at Hunter Mountain and that was just an awesome experience. These days I tend to do ride the bike more on the road than off-road, since most of my "heavy" riding is on the BMX bike. Either way, it's a lot of fun and a great workout. :)

X-Rays show they are healing, but not actually "connected" yet, so I still have to take it easy for a while. All in all, things are well though. They really don't hurt much - only when I first get out of bed, that's really it. :)

The first video is a downhill, not the heavy bike to actually pedal and ride around. Lots of fun until you get into the hospital, a friend of mine broke a pelvis doing that in CO and he was a champ motorcross rider. Sure looks like a blast to do though. Did you guys see the one of the guy on a mountain in Chile or where ever when the frame broke in half? The second that kid is good, but I'd like to see him ride a few miles and jump some stuff then ride back....all with no seat.
The one I have is an aluminum mongoose, but not from walmart its one the dealers sold. I could have the seat high enough to ride roads and still jump fine with the BMX, but not with the mountain bike. I also feel like I'm over the bars too far, and it is really hard to pull the front with it. Can hang way off the back and front stays planted but can lift the rear no problem....can you say endo? Tried some other bikes when I bought that one in about '99, but felt the same. Sure I can ride over a jump, but what fun is that? I only have a rebuilt roxshocks and nothing in back, but maybe its lighter. I was going to get a suspension seatpost but never bothered. I do like style of the frame as it is much more like a BMX bike than others I looked at back then.
I can't believe you guys think they work well for jumping, maybe you'd like an old steel frame huffy they feel the same to me. Just can't move that big thing around under you like a BMX. Maybe newer frames are better and this just my .02. Mine rides nice on the road, its light so it goes good even with the big knobs as long as you keep the tires up. I don't see that much difference in frame geometry from road except the head is steeper so it turns quicker, maybe the rider is moved forward a little for hill climbing (and worse for downhills), and of course a 24 is very small for a road frame. Mine does have a long neck on it that I don't like, but with the smaller frame it gives some room to me. Really should try a setback seatpost and shorter neck but thats not the whole problem. Since I don't do the hardcore offroad anymore I gave up on it and now hardly have time to use it at all. Mine is like this one but not sure that is exact number, but think the frames in that series were all the same and numbers change with components: http://www.epinions.com/bike-Bicycles-All-84105-Mongoose_NX_7_1__1999
Likely I need a frame like the blue one in that pic, its just a BMX frame for larger wheels....have not looked lately but never saw those sold as mountain bikes they were 24" BMX. When I bought all the bike shops told me to get a mountain bike, and it was just like a road bike generally....and I could only find this 'goose that was close to what I wanted. It had to be big enough to ride may miles as I rode trails then. This was one of the very few frames with a lower top tube.

Skill it must be; I always tried to have a good bike that was easier to ride...not a kmart junker that was harder to ride. (and thats what a mountain bike is compared to a BMX when you jump, a kmart blue light special)
That mongoose is a mountain bike not BMX. I've never seen mountain bikes raced on a track but don't keep up with it lately either. It also kind of reminded me of my old PK. I rode minimum of 10miles every time I took it out when I got it...can't do that on a 20" bike that well.
Ages ago? LOL, you are the one talking about all the 80s BMX stuff:) People are paying thousands for that ancient crap, though I doubt new bikes are much different. The rider is what matters.

In terms of mountain bikes, 1999 is a very long time ago. Mountain bikes have changed a lot more than BMX bikes, especially in recent years. Mountain bikes are not normally raced on BMX tracks, but they are legal to race in the cruiser classes, according to NBL rules.

If I had time to ride more I'd look for something else, but I don't. At the time I rode with people who were so into it...I told them the bikes sucked and any 15yr old kid who could ride his BMX would kill them on the offroad trails we rode sometimes, because the kid would have. They were getting hurt all the time thinking they could handle rough trails. In the open and steep hills you had gears and that was the only advantage....corners/jumping was a death trap. Those mountain bikes were for on/off road touring and nothing more. But I will check some new ones out just to see what they look like now.
I really should just get a BMX and set up a jump in the driveway...:D lol

The MB I have just isn't fun though it works great as long as you are on the seat. The worst issue is that the front is so heavy, its pure work to get the front up at speed. I found it hazardous on back trails when you might have to react quickly to an obstacle or head over the bars. It might be great for pedaling up cliffs but I don't live in Moab. I'll have to find out what the post size is...another pita with MBs.
I miss riding, just no me-time right now.
