Pulled my heads off my 2001 3.0L omc for the first time. After removing the gaskets from the block i found a good amount of corrosion around the water jackets and some that is getting close to the sleeves. I bought it used from florida off a guy off of here, bass something, and im sure it was a offshore motor. I don't run it in anything but fresh water now and im just wondering if i need to worry. i plan on letting the guru's have their way with it this winter and im wondering if it is a waist of money working off this block. or will running in fresh for now on stop the corrosion.

HI.I don,t knowthis engine however seperate water jackets from heads clean with vinegar or muriatic acid see the results and go from heads to block seal cylinders or cover with duct tape small wire brushes or tooth brush all water jackets with acid and water this will allow better picture of things thanks.

He could also do the vinegar thing in a drum and let it idle for periods of time. I don't know if it'll work tho.

it gets too bad you can have the aluminum cut out from the top of the sleeves and have bushings made and pressed onto the top of the sleeves to give the head gaskets new material to seat on.
Unfortunately if you bought a motor that has not been opened up there is no way to tell existing condition in that area.
I've sold a couple of bare blocks with some corrosion on them but never to the point of being a sealing issue.
If it's not too bad you can also get the block decked 5 or 10 thousandths to clean it up.

The guy i bought the motor from was Bass? his first name is brad. I don't currently have pictures and i don't plan on taking the heads off til after season. The corrosion is not effecting the sleeve and is sealing fine with the head gasket. I just want to know the major draw back of the existing corrosion. thanks guys

If anything, the corrosion will act like a blanket, holding in more heat, but I doubt a considerable amount. Clean as much as you can and keep an eye on your temps. Like Racer said, try getting some pictures on here and they'll tell us what's up.
Careful when cleaning!:)

how do you know it's corroded?
Anoher option though if not too bad is to clean area and then fill voids w/marinetex.
Smoth area when cured and reassemble.

The corrosion will only get worse. By just cleaning it and doing noththing to repair it now, you will be loking at a more costly repair. The water will seep in to the corroded area and the corrosion will just keep growing. I say fix it now before you need a new block.
