I have a xr4 mid with a 2.5 (200hp carbs) powerhead. My question is would it help to shorten the length of the tuner? Or just swap it out?
What tuners do you guys suggest?
I've heard of a g force tuner but cant find any info on them. I'm just looking to let this breath better not wanting a loud open exhaust.
Thaks guys

My opinion is that aftermarket tuners are the MOST overrated part ever sold for outboards, and maybe for all of recreational motorsports. I've never seen any worthwhile or measurable difference from one to the other. Merc has even varied the length and size of em greatly over the years. People lose track of the name............. TUNER. They're NOT expansion chambers, headers or anything close, but a VERY SMALL tuning aid, usually targeted to make a little bit of difference at some particular condition.

If you're running a drag boat and looking for hundreths of a second, and have done everything else you can think of, then MAYBE tuner experimentation may be worthwhile. If it's a lake toy you'll probably find about as much change as you would in putting chrome tail pipe extensions on an old pickup truck.

Like a lot of other people, I feel like they're SSSSSSSSSSSSnake oil.

I like to post this picture because it makes a point of two tuners that I tested the same day on the same boat, and of course the same weather. The long tuner with the single tube is from a T2X inline six race motor, and irrelevant to what we're talking about here, except for the fact that some people contend that a long tuner kills top end and is used on some V6's to limit horsepower. So much for that argument since the T2X was in fact a high RPM race motor in comparison with it's inline cousins. The other two are the ones for comparison here. The longer dual outlet one is from the first Merc T3/1750XS race motor. The short one was Merc's second design one for the same motor. I switched from the long one to the short one on the same motor at the same time, and there was NO difference in measured speed, or feelable difference in acceleration.

Back to your question about G Force (G Farce in my dictionary). They're made of sheet metal and notorious for breaking off. My experience with them was that the boat ran as good with em broken as in one piece.

Thanks Raceman
I was trying to get an idea if swapping mine out would help my performance, I've read on here that a lot of guys swap the 150 out for the preffered 200 2.4L tuner.

If your 150 has a screwy long tuner you CAN enhance performance with the addition of a shorter tuner from a 200 style engine or a Bob's aftermarket one..

good luck,
