trying to figure out the pros and cons of each oil before the new motor gets fired up next week ( hopefully )

BTW- its a 250 ETEC on the back of a 20' Whaler.

XD50 is a semi synthetic oil. XD100 is a full synthetic with carbon fighting additives. It is the absolute best oil you can buy for the Etec. With the EMM programmed for XD100, that engine will SIP oil. I put a tad over 100hrs on my 225HO in the first year and burnt about 4 gallons of oil in that time. I seriously buy a gallon of oil every 3 months or so. With that being said, the new HO motors are not being allowed to run on the XD100 setting, and the laptop programming is written now so that on already setup HO motors it automatically resets the oil setting to XD50. Your tech has to manually reset it to XD100 everytime they plug the laptop in. Your guess is as good as mine as to why this is, and it only applies to HO motors, not yours. Mine has only seen XD100 on the XD100 setting from the first time it was ever cranked and that is all it will ever see. If it makes you leary running on the lean setting, then you can run XD100 on the XD50 setting. Just burns more of it. Down here XD100 is $27/gallon in bulk so it is not too bad, even on the rich setting.

that confirms my thoughts, XD100 it is then.

Just want to make sure they set it and forget it

the same goes if you want to run something other the xd100 then you need the eem rest. My mechanic wont let me run anything other then xd100 I get 2 gallons at a crack for $37. I dont know what kind of driving you do but I've used about 3 gallons since May when I bought the motor. MY $.02

How in the heck have you used that much oil?!?! Mine uses a gallon every 125 gallons of fuel, and I drive the living piss out of it! If you have gone through 3 gallons of XD100 in 3 months then either you are OPEC's best buddy or something is not setup right. Are there any oil codes in the emm? If it sets a code for "oil pulse not detected at manifold" the computer will automatically up the oil ratio until it is sure there is no problem.

I dont know It used the first gallon pretty slow, I had it pluged in at like 8 hours for a no oil fault that showed up the first hour I had it out, My mech said it would get easier on oil but I dont think it has. Maybe I little worse if ya ask me. I drive it like I stole it. I'm going to call him and talk about this tomarrow.

What rpms are you turning on the top end? Anything over 5800 and it will DRINK the oil, the computer knows that you are trying to tear it up and puts the extra oil in to try to help out.

Mine drank the first gallon, took it 10hrs 13 mins to kick out of extra oil mode. It will show an oil code (oil pump pulses not detected at distribution manifold) during the initial setup and start of the motor. Takes it a few minutes to bleed the oil system. I would try running it through the self winterization procedure to help it purge any air out of the lines. If it sees a bubble it may not set a code, but will up the oil ratio.

The 40/50/60 have 2 quart oil reservoirs and the 70/90 have 3 quart reservoirs, both mounted "under the hood".

With XD100, this was considered to be enough oil to last for 1 years of "average" use !

we blew through a gallon of XD100 oil in no time, not even a weekend.

We were also exploring that no break in period and doing prop testing.
Running the boat anywhere from 5100-5400.

Not enough engine height to get 5800, being so close to the end of the season we gave up for now, in a few weeks we are lifting the motor and re-propping.

Wizard- what do you mean under the hood?

The smaller motors do not have an oil reservoir mounted in the boat, they have a 1 gallon reservoir on the block of the motor, under the cowling. ;)

As you get some time on it, it will free up as well...At around 30hrs my 225HO picked up about 200rpm..Enough that you could feel it on holeshot, midrange, and top end...I remember thinking that day "Oh chit, I've always heard they run best right before they blow up....":D

I know what it meant, I just did not know why you were messing with me telling me that it holds oil under the hood :D
