View Full Version : Old boats and old engines? The future of performance boating

It seems most if not all the boats we drive are old designs. If there are new ones, say 5 yearsish what are they?
Then there is the engine. I'm not really counting the 2.5 as being old but that it seems the 2 cycle has a definate end in sight.
True or false?
What do you think? Will new boats be designed to work with new engines? I'm assuming the new engines will be considerably heavier, but there should be some kind of advancement with the boats. Unless we are -have been, at the SR-71s point if you see what I mean.:)

Old boats? Pretty much. The last two V bottoms were the SS2000 and the Venom. Are there any new tunnels out there?
But the hull construction is moving ahead, so we can get lighter, stronger hulls.
I think lighter 200-225 HP engines will come. But it would have to be driven by the bass boat market.
I don't think 8000 rpm direct injection engines will happen, so 280 HP in a 400 lb package is not likely.

Bumpin this back to the top. Maybe we will see some boats being built to handle the verado's and the new yam V8 in the Modified V's or Tunnels. I wonder how it would fit in being in the 50K range with the newer engines? Great Post.

Add solid mounts and a nose cone to a 175XS or small block 200 Rude, and put either on the back of an SS2000 or GS. You'd be over 80 with a fun package. Fast enough for me.
But it would be nice to get the cone and mounts from the factory.

Someone, a couple of months ago, posted a picture of the new Allison 24' sport boat that is a proto-type. If it does come out, and is somewhat sucessfull, maybe one of the current tunnel boat builders will "stretch" their current models to make a better fit for todays new "hi-po?" motors. Say maybe a 24' River Rocket or duel engine Marage River Racer? Just a thought!:D

what about the boat that Vicious is doing? Is this a new design?

I don't know. Is Vicious building a new design? Does it use the 1/2ton outboard motors now available?

Full Throttle Powerboats build a new design tunnel, Vicious build the 17' cat and have a new mod-vp comming out, the Venom is a new design and the other new boats from hydrostream, Voyager, Vegas, Ventura. Triad DR20 and DRX I think it was called.
But, yes I see where your comming from none of these would be suitable for a yamaha 350 fourstroke!

One motor I have been looking at interestingly has been the suzuki 300, but like most of the other big fourstrokes they only come in 25" shaft's and the gear ratio sux.

Thay actually just launched a 20" model. Called it 250SS, but it is the same motor as the 300...
