View Full Version : Labor Day - St. Pete/Shell Island

We did it last Labor Day, this past Memorial Day, and now we're gonna do it again for Labor Day 2007.
Spending the weekend on the West Coast in St. Pete. We'll be staying at the Holiday Inn - Sunspree, which for anyone who hasn't been there, is a great place to stay if you've got a boat. Plenty of parking and a hose to flush and wash the boats down at the end of the day.
If there's enough interest maybe I'll call over to the hotel and see if we can block some rooms off, and maybe even get a little bit of a break on the rate.
We've got Friday off so we'll be there early Friday morning and staying through Monday. I'm sure one of the days we might do a trip down to Longboat like we did on Memorial Day.
I can bring extra "Salt-Away" for those that are scared to run in the salt too.  :D :D
hell yeah, i ain't skeered to go to shell, I'm in!!:p :D

A couple points, they have passed a new No Alcohol Plan and anchoring on the sandbar just inside the cut is out, not sure when it goes into effect. The Alcohol is none in the Preserve, even on the boat, the preserve line runs down the center of the Pass'es on each end, so includes all the islands. Passage Key isn't what it used to be, I'm pretty sure its just a bar and no real dry land anymore but I don't go down that far. I do think the new rules will be in place by 9/1 but I'll check since we go alot and also camp on the south end, I'll post up but Egmont might be ticket.

I know how active you are with things on the water around here (from reading the FSforums), but I could not find anything about the new rules you mentioned. Can you point me in the right direction?
http://www.pinellascounty.org/Environment/pagesHTML/pdfs/Shell%20Key.pdf
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y174/makulaf/shellisland.gif
Additionally,
http://www.pinellascounty.org/Environment/pagesHTML/envLands/el7600.html
This is what i found in a document dated August, 2007:
With regard to alcohol:
Action 2: Prohibit the possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages on Shell Key. The possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on the island of Shell Key. Alcohol use in the remainder of the preserve is subject to existing laws governing alcohol consumption and safe boat handling. Law enforcement agencies have indicated that most problems encountered in managing public uses on public lands are alcohol related.
The way I read this, there is no change to the alcohol plan; don't take it on the island since it is a preserve, and follow normal rules on the water (I.e., don't be an idiot, don't get a bui, don't drink under age..)
As for no boating:
Action 1: Post shallow seagrasses and create internal combustion engine restriction zones. Extensive seagrass beds occur in the shallow waters east of Shell Key. Prop scars are evident throughout much of this area. Signs will be posted to alert boaters of areas where seagrass beds occur in shallow waters and extremely shallow areas will be posted as zones where the use of internal combustion engines is prohibited (see Figure 8 (http://www.pinellascounty.org/Environment/pagesHTML/envLands/sk_list_figures/figure8.JPG)) to prevent damage to seagrasses (and disturbance to feeding birds). Boat access by sailing, poling, rowing or trolling motors will still be allowed in those areas. This will be accomplished by local ordinance as was done to the south in the Ft. DeSoto Aquatic Habitat Management Area.
Action 2: Identify boating channels. Channels within the preserve will be appropriately marked.
Action 3: Provide information to boaters about seagrass protection efforts. Informational signs will be placed within the preserve and at local boat ramps and marinas to alert boat operators about the presence of seagrasses and about internal combustion engine restrictions and "Seagrass Caution" zones.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y174/makulaf/shellisland2.jpg
In reading the above passage combine with the photo printed, it looks like a large part of shell on the inside is still open to internal combustion engines, bit it does look like they are restricting the northeast part heading towards billy,'s except for the channel. I also could not find when they plan to implement this.
Again, I know how involved you are with what is going on on the water on the WC, but can you help point me to something that will give some more info? thanks,
fish

This is from the 2007 Plan, although it will not be in effect yet as their still having meetings. Camping will be with Permit now too, and no anchoring on the sandbar inside the northend effectively killing that spot for anything other than standing around.
2007 Plan
Under the 2007 management plan, the possession and/or consumption of alcoholic
beverages will not be allowed in the Preserve (including the islands and waterways) in
accordance with Ordinance 2-6 consistent with other environmental lands. The boundaries of the
Preserve will be posted as necessary to eliminate any confusion among visitors. The intent of
this provision is to address excessive and intrusive consumption of alcohol (and incumbent, but
unacceptable, social behaviors). It is not meant to impact those boaters bound for other
destinations who transit within the boundaries of the Preserve with alcohol on-board. Law
enforcement officers will use their discretion in the exercising of this provision.
what 2007 plan are you looking at ESD? I posted the link to the pinellas county Shell Key Preserve management plan above, and i believe it is the most current data, but knowing who you are on FS/WC, do not doubt that you might have heard something that I have not. Can you tell me where I can find your info?
Here is the link again and a quote from the public use portion. Not trying to argue, just trying to read from the same page as you to better understand. (note: bold added for ease of reading)
PUBLIC USE GOAL 2: Balance Public Uses of Shell Key With Conservation of Significant Natural Resources.
Action 1: Provide for overnight activities on Shell Key. Since the presence of humans near the core bird protection areas is more disruptive to birds at night and since enforcement is more difficult after dark, all overnight activities are limited to the southern and northern extremes of the island. Visitors to Shell Key between the hours of sunset and sunrise are allowed only in those areas shown on Figure 8 (http://www.pinellascounty.org/Environment/pagesHTML/envLands/sk_list_figures/figure8.JPG) as "Overnight Use Areas".
Action 3: Manage large groups visiting Shell Key. Groups of 50 or more people visiting the island must obtain written approval from Pinellas County. Such approval may include specific conditions such as limiting the duration of the event, security provisions, sanitation provisions, trash removal or lighting restrictions to ensure that the activity is consistent with the resource management component of this plan.
Thanks,
fish

Heres the link, yours is as of now and the current stuff, as this plan will be adopted in Oct, there still are a couple meetings left although I can't believe they didn't rush it through for Labor Day :D
http://www.pinellascounty.org/Environment/pagesHTML/SK_site/sk500.html
its quite deep in the plan I believe about page 50. As usual as soon as the Gov. figured out people were having too much fun the axe, they can't stand anybody having fun.

I could not agree with you more about the fun police, although I have to beleive the occupants of some of the newly developed mansions around there may have had something to do with (or influence) this new save the seagrass crap. Guess they could not find any manatees to release back there. ;)

I don't think they did, just the huggers and beaurcrats, the fight was a big one and the giant fire 100' X 100'. Last time I was there they had 3 or 4 cop boats sitting there on the 4th, everybody was very well mannered and just hanging out, but I guess Parker wasn't there either :D

We were there Memorial weekend and there were no problems. The only thing was JoJo doing the KEG STANCE,too funny, and no one was counting for him. FUNNY S*IT (I opted to ride in the pantera on the way home) We ran down to longboat key and then up the shell Island. I enjoyed both places. Longboat was just our croud and it was nice having a couple of drinks then heading to shell to get a little crazy. Just being out on the ocean I'm happy with. Looking forward to being there. Going to CT this weekend and 1 weekend in between. Can't wait.

allright im jealous, but if you want to hear the big dogs bark you gota pay !! but this boat will get 3 good trips out of that around 120 miles each,
if you get right down to it ,outdrive parts are much more pricey than fuel, the only problem with fuel is it slows you down and you break More parts ,when you carry more weight,,LOL ....:no trim no win!!!!

The closest ramps to the hotel are O'Niels and Maximo Park, both are fine and just on the otherside ( they are on west side resort is on east side) of the Skyway. If you coming from the north the exit is the next one past the BAYWAY exit (which goes to Ft Desoto and is big) the reason I mention that is the correct exit is small and you might miss it as I have. Its just the next one past the Bayway exit turn right and you go right into Maximo Park, exit the park channel and turn left follow that around and go left(east) under the first bridge and look for the resort on the left. If anybody has any questions since I'm familar with the area you can call me on my cell 813-992-5794, or if your lost I can probably figure out where you are on the phone :D

That's where we put in, which is Maximo park. It's the very last exit before you go over the Skyway (heading south). Shell island is only about 5 or so miles from Maximo. Leaving Maximo (by boat ;) ) you head south about a mile or two and bank a right heading towards Tierra Verde. Pass Tierra Verde on the left (which is a no wake zone.) The entrance to Shell island will be a mile or so down south of Tierra Verde. The whole route from Maximo to Shell is channel marked, so it's pretty easy to get to.
If we head to Longboat, we'll take the channel out of Maximo all the way south to the Skyway and then cut across the inlet to the intra-coastal.

i'll just virtually enjoy the ride, like from a different plane. :D gotta cycle my tank thru a big filter and remove a bunch of crap, other wise i think i can get in the low 50's at like 15 mpg, it's nuts! i went 30mi on like 1.6 gal. figure that. fun out

Your OK Shell Island and all the surrounding waters are on the inside, and very sheltered, if I can figure out where to go you may be able to jump on the SeaCraft. Or we hang around Shell Is. my cell for anybody's use is 813 992 5794
Go here for a chart of the channels and check the pic's posted earler for aerials as Shell Island is not named on the chart but runs from Bounces Pass to Pass A Grille - DO NOT cut through the back to get to the north or south end, shallow and against the rules, just watch the signs its marked.

I am going to have to see you guys on Saturday only.I hope yall come down to Longboat pass sat because If not I dont think I'm going all the way to shell from Sarasota. Its probably 30-35 miles away by water and can get rough in Tampa bay.I would trailer up to Maximo for the shell day but my trailer has three bad tires. The damn treads are coming off.I might be able to get around town to the ramp here but there is no way I am taking it on the interstate untill its got four new shoes.

i'm so sore it hurts to go downstairs. sun morn we met euro Scott at the ramp, took a quick 2 min tour of the bay in sarasota and went to the inlet, looped thru the cove by the charthouse resturant, looked quite cool, out the inlet and north thru 4-5' at 65-75 mph for what seemed like 3 days  we're standing behind the helm seats holding a rail, i tried sitting, but my nuts were getting weightless and slamming down so hard i had to stand  it was like rideing a horse at full gate for a half hour. :o fun but, phuck it, one of the coolest things i ever did in my life:D :D :D next we stopped, hung at a sand bar w/ Rob, John and his family and some new friends, went south to a little tiki bar about 15'by30' w/200 people and met some of the poker run peeps :D offshore, drifting swimming, back on trailer. Euro Scott, thanks dude for an insite into the offshore world. We left out of the Shell Island pass at around 12:00 on Sat. and headed south to Passage Key (the naked place  ) From there we went up Tampa Bay to the Pier. A couple guys cut back inside, but us and a guy in a 25 Cigarette rode right up the middle through center span at the Skyway.
