I think Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, Joe Perry, Billy Gibbons, and by All means Angus Young should have ranked way higher than they did. I think Chuck Berry's rank was a bit low. But they are missing one of the best of all time and that would be BB King.

Random thoughts:
I always meant to check out Quicksilver Messenger Service. How many albums do they have?
Uli Jon Roth should have been higher, he is amazing. His take on Vivaldi blew me away.
Does anyone have the Buckethead album he did w/ the guys from P-Funk?
Alex Skolnick should have been higher than a lot of the metal/hard rock guys. Come on - Vito Bratta? Nuno?
It's good to see Jason Becker there...he's still hanging on after 18 years of enduring ALS. http://www.jasonbecker.com/
I love Dream Theater but I don't know if Petrucci should be that high.

woa dude, we think too much alike.
what throws a monkey wrench in rating these guys is the era and time they came up. Like Hendrix, you're insane if you say that he wouldnt have grown as an artist if he didnt die so young. It really sucks that he never got to reach his full potential. (as I believe the case is with Dime also) :( not to mention, would any of these guys been as good as they are without the old school guitarists in the 50s? i dont think so.

I am in utter disbelief that Randy Rhodes was never mentioned in these posts. No Steve Morse either? For shame. I also think my personal favorite, Slash should be on that list. No Malmsteen either?
Randy is one of the reasons I play.

I use Seymour Duncan Distortion or JB in the bridge, and the '59 in the neck on most of my guitars. The My RG570 has the stock V-series pickups, which actually sound good - but that guitar is new, so I haven't really used it to want to change them. I have too many guitars here that I don't use. :)

I didn't look through the list, but I have a top 10 - in no certain order really...depends on my mood:
1. Yngwie Malmsteen. The guy can play anything and totally brought on the need to practice. He's actually a KILLER blues player and can play with a lot more feeling than he's given credit for.
2. Eddie Van Halen. Very cliche, but who's done more for rock guitar playing besides Hendrix?
3. Jimi Hendrix. I'm not really a fan of his music, but you can't deny what he's done for rock guitar.
4. Stevie Ray Vaughan. Brought technique and a little flash to blues but kept that gritty, "I just lost my wife, my job, and my dog" mentality to blues.
5. Nuno Bettencourt. Between Nuno and Vito Bratta, probably the best rhythm players alive. It's so hard to write music that has that much movement in the guitar parts and still be able to make it fit with a vocal melody. Plus, Nuno just has outrageous lead skills.
6. Michael Angelo Batio. I know the guy...he lives about 10 miles from me so we grew up playing the same stages, etc. Absolutely zero feel to his playing, but for sheer outrageous technique, he's the king. You should see him in person. It looks like he's not even playing because his pick hand technique is so perfect - the pick barely moves.
7. Paul Gilbert. Of all the post Yngwie Shrapnel Records guitar players. I think he's the best. Racer X is probably the best guitar band of all time. Two freakin unbelieveable guitar players that play those sick leads in harmony live? Are you kidding me?
8. Steve Vai. Does so much with the guitar...can really make it speak. Plus, he's so identifiable. He can play one note and you instantly know it's him. He was AWESOME as the Devil's guitar player in Crossroads. Ripped that Paganini piece right off. (even though his character screwed it up, he actually played it for the Ralph Macchio character).
9. Randy Rhoads. What I like about Randy Rhoads is that of all these guitar players, his stuff is unbelievable yet something that I can actually get my mind around and play some of. It's approachable. I can't play Yngwie, and I can't play Paul Gilbert, but I can play a little bit of Randy Rhoads solos. At least I have a shot at it.
10. Al Dimeola. Fire on guitar. The guy can play jazz or just rip your head off with speed, cleanliness, and with a sticky jazz tone on top of it. Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway is a true classic. Yngwie without the sweeps, but ridiculous technique.
As far as my equipment.
Guitars: Floyd Rose DST2-BK, Floyd Rose DSOT3-STR, Fender Showmaster HH Flamed Ash, Carvin 5 string Bass, Peavey 5 String Bass, Hondo Van Halen II copy (Black with Yellow stripes).

The thing with lists like these is that it's all a matter of taste. Criteria changes from listener to listener. Do you prefer wild solos? Or some rythym shredding? What about the straight simplicity of Johnny Ramone? What about that guy who looks like Zorro who sells guitars on the Home shopping network? :D

Perhaps a better way to look at isn't so much the "Greatest" but the "Most Significant".
Many of these peope were inovators that may seem like a cliche today because so many have copied them.
For example, try to compare Hendrix to everyone else in the mid 60's or Van Halen with eveyone in the late 70's. Heck look at Robert Johnson, Ledbelly, Les Paul, Chuck Barry all in that kind of a context.
If you base your list that way if may turn out quite different. ;)

Just some drunken images.............IF I were TO lump the top four from the SAME era within 1year of each other I'd take a REAL LONG listen to them & what they've done within the last 30 years (sans Jimi) . I think if that was done you'd put JEFF BECK in #1 (as deserved)..............he's the only guitarist of the top four to do ANYTHING of worth within the last 35 years !!
I'm thinking that guy named DAVID BOWIE seems to have a real talent of surrounding himself with KILLER musicians (FIVE on the 100 list) & WHERE THE HELL IS REEVES GABRELS ????? I think we all know we need to throw BUTT BOY (DZ) into the mix !! Scott :D.........PS NO JACK WHITE ?????????????

No one mentions Jerry Reed? Most of his personal stuff was light hearted and wasnt taken seriously, but when he toured with Elvis because the king couldnt find anyone who could play a few songs he got from Reed, I would say that makes him pretty good. Then again, once when Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world, he came back with "I dont know, ask Jerry Reed." Stands for something with me.

That list looks more like a popularity contest to me. I don't remember seeing Les Paul's name listed. And way too many fantastic guitarist listed WAY too low. What the heck is Dick Dale doing in there?
My top 10, in no paticular order. But there's so many incredable guitarist it's almost impossible to pick a top 10 from all music styles.
Duane Allman, Via, Clapton, Steve Morse, Marty Friedman, Les Paul, David Gilmore, Hendrix, Pat Metheny
Me, I'm still learning and need to pratice WAY more than I am. But taking care of my sister takes most of my time and almost all of my energy.
My equipment, I just bought a Crate Vintage Club 30 off of eBay, this thing sounds incredable!!!
Also bought me a few cheap guitars lately, off of eBay. Got a 1994 Fender Strat,Mexican made, for 180 bucks. Picked up a Hamer Scarbe for 180 bucks, a Raven West 45P for 217 bucks and a Strat style body, H-S-H, made out of one solid piece of Bubinga and am gonna put a Koa neck with a Pau Fero fretboard on it.
I came into a little bit of money and am investing most of it but wanted to pick up some guitars to try. I've bought them cheap enough that I think I can get my money back out of them if I don't want to keep them.
And one of my investments is a Dean Rebel Razorback that I got cheap!!!:D
Hopefully it'll go up in price like I think it is.

Les Paul, like many jazz greats, wasn't there. Good to see Johnny Winter who often gets overlooked.
Clapton had his "Guitar Fest" here in Chicago a couple weeks ago. All proceeds went to his drug rehab center in Antigua. Lots of heavy hitters were there. Steve Winwood showed up and he and Clapton did some Blind Faith tunes. Actually, Winwood, whose typically seen as a keyboard guy, impressed the critics quite a bit while on guitar. BB King wowed the crowd at the end.
In a newspaper interview, Clapton was asked if he'd ever played with anyone that made him feel he was in over his head. He related a story from the early 70's. He got caught between Roland Kirk and Buddy Miles, the drummer (and head raisin in the old commercials for you young guys). .Clapton, once they got going, wished he would have stayed at home.

Pretty objective list, but hard to take serious when Steve Morse doesn't make it.
Niel Young makes it but Steve Stills doesn't???
Clapton quit doing lead on his next album after he had Duane Allman on Layla....
Dickie Betts over Warren Haynes..even Dickie would disagree.
Anyone ever actually LISTEN to Kieth Richards play guitar????

Here's one for Gilmore. He was so drunk at Jasper that I think he kept telling me the chick singer in this band was "so hot." For the record Scott, "her" name is Jim Gillette. He's...err...I mean "She's" married to Lita Ford.
Actually, it's a technically perfect guitar player who can actually make you laugh just due to the sheer notes that he's playing and the utter lack of feeling. I've seen Michael Angelo live a bunch (he lives right by me) and he's a freak, but after a couple of songs, you've pretty much seen every string, every note, every fret played and your brain just can't handle the sound pressures.

Here's number 1. Yngwie Malmsteen said this was impossible to play on guitar, so it must be truly insane.

That is real guitar playing or should I say unreal. Lets see,no over driven amp, delay, sustain and every other wana be a rock star guitar players crutch. Not saying that those items are bad but being a good player without them is what most electric bucketheads lack.lol

From what I found on Google, it's a 59 Les Paul. Neck pickup is installed with the pole screws opposite of normal.
