Call your local prop shop, they can usually weld that for you at a minium charge. It will look as good as new when finished and will hold as well!

Replacement Skegs are available on ebay. It's a one piece casting that could be cut to fit in your broken section.

This is not a recommendation to repair a broken skeg. Safest is to replace the housing.

If it's a small chip, clean it up and paint it, or have a prop shop weld in a piece. It'll hold.

If there's been enough stress on it to bend the whole thing a little, or start a crack that would compromise a major area of the skeg, I'd replace the housing. A 50 horse fishin' motor is one thing, but if you break a skeg on that thang, you'll put a hole in your gunwale with your azz.

hope it helps

I have repaired many, i have also installed several lwp units. when modifying skeggs length 61/2 inches from the bottom of the housing to the lower edge of the skegg was the length of the very first modified unit i got from JC's over 10 years ago so i have used that dim. ever since i dont know for sure if that is the optimum length i do know it worked on my boat and no one has complained about it since i started using it. small chunks out of skegg on the lower half of the skegg when repaired (1" or so) pose little problems in my experience when welded properly . just my 02 Bobby V.

overtons sells a product called skegguard. its a stainless case that slips over your skeg, and you bolt it on (i think). looks good and gives you added protection.

Ahhhhhh..........

I dont think that will stop one from snapping off, and is SURLY not condusive to speed gains.

AND MAY weaken the skeg so that it will break off !

It looks like it is mounted by drilling several holes thru the skeg, AT ITS BASE which is to me, is like a score line, (like you would make to cut glass) that would cause a more likely chance for it to break along that line.

Only my .02, but makes sense to me.

Is probably ok for slower boats, but prob. not to good for faster ones.

This is the way to go if it's a sportmaster, plenty of extra to work with that needs to come off anyway.

I'm told when somthin hits them, whole skeg breaks off instead of a little peice- makes sence--things break at the weakest point which will b just below bullit when u use skegguard! I ordered em & sent em back! Used 2part aluminum epoxy & filled voids using drywall tape folded 2 make razor edge--dressed w/file when cured--U can also use grey marine tex but the epoxy I used has aluminum particals in it and a higher tensil strength!

I understand the concern about fixing skegs, it has more to do with the guy doing the repair than the repair itself. Herring was modifying skegs of #6 drives for many many years and I have yet to see a Herring mod fail. The skegs on #6 are much larger (more stress) than those of the outboards, speeds are in excess of 140mph, hp and the boats are much bigger. If its done right then I wouldn't have a problem. Would not go to my local prop shop.
Herring's mod worked so well that Merc actually changed the casting of the #6 to incorporate it.

I snapped a skeg on a stock #6 (new style), it broke off just under the bullet. We were in a flat spin at 100mph when it broke :D
