Considering a rig with an '89 2.5 according to owner. Says dealers always tell him serial # indicates 2.4 but only 2.5 parts will fit the powerhead. He had the head rebuilt in '2000 & has documentation. When did the first carbed 2.5s come out & does anybody know the serial #s? I will post pics of the powerhead later tonight. Thanks:D

they were released in 1992 but he could have used a 2.5 crank in a 2.4 and then you would have to change all the rods then you can bore the motor on all cylinders and sleave to be a 2.5.. Then install 2.5 pistons.. But it wouldn't be a behind the liner motor and not much better than a 2.4 for bottom end power. SO the serial number would come back to a 2.4 and it would be true that it would require 2.5L hardparts inside.. But that seems like a huge waste of money to do all that..

Or.. He could just be blowing 2-stoke smoke up your @ss and be full of &hit like so many people that you meet at the sandbar that claims they have a 300 HP monster because they installed reeds and releived the exhaust.

that the the 2.5's begin life in '91, but that's just what I've learned from reading this board. I can't really back it up with any proof and I'm not positive how to directly tell from looking at one externally.

I actually think that you are right.. They were manufatured in 1991. But I belive the model year was 1992...

its hard to tell fully dressed.. But if you could remove the idol stabalizer on the port side so you can take a better picture of the sides of the cylinders / block . But from what I see I can't rule out it being a 2.5

it looks like there is a set of WMH carbs.. which is the newer style that you find on the 2.5's.. THere is also other parts there that you woudn't find on a 1989 engine.. one thing is the linkage going to the carbs.. In a 1989 it was designed slightly differnt. Have you checked the date code stamped on the block? I know the serial number comes to a 1989 but does the date code agree with that?

Get the serial number off the top of the block in beween the heads and do yourself a favor...if it's put together from an assortment stay far far away from it.

Nuttin stamped in the plate. Well it has the good fuel pump and air box with enrichment valve...mine did too (built 2.4) but it's really hard to say. I think the main difference other than size was steel sleeves instaed of chrome bore which made the 2.5's from the early 90's great motor to build power with.

I'm not sure if factory drop ons have the #'s stamped on the block plug or not. It is possible that it is a factory replacement. Part of my memory tells me that factory replacements have no #. Pull the heads and make sure cause there is a huge difference between the motors.

The motor in the photos is probably an '89 Merc
200 stock production fishing motor. They switched
from a 2.4 to 2.5 in 1989,adding a 40 amp charging system and drop-on cowl. I had an '86, an '87
200 and an '88 Laser 220 EFI which were all 2.4
powerheads. They all had clam shell cowlings.
To be sure though you can check the production date on the block and the label on the mid-section
to be sure. That is what I remember,I could be wrong though. Merc Hi-Perf engines were 2.4 Bridgeports until '91 when they introduced the 2.5
series as a '92 model.
Thanks

My '89 is an EFI.
Most of that block and the location of components looks the same. The one big thing that I notice that's different, is the trim switch on that one is on the side of the lower cowl, mine is hidden on the bottom.

Is your '89 a 2.4 or 2.5?

Where to locate date codes or serial #s on powerhead? Aren't there some #s behind the throttle linkage on each block half, do these indicate anything?

it is on the port side of the block behind the arm that connects to the trigger..

Mine is a 2.4. He's either pulling your leg, or he just isn't familiar with his rig and he's mistaken. "2.4, 2.5, close enough."

Or, there's still that possibility that the powerhead was swapped. I don't know a damned thing about them date codes...

75, yeah, maybe with me driving it alone at 140 lbs...

With the proper setup, who knows...

I have a 2.5 efi high perf block that is stamped 91 model and the guys title i got it from said 91 model aswell therefore i would have to say that atleast some were sold in 91! I have a 92 model high perf. motor and it is 4 bolt main where as the 91 is 2 bolt both are high perf blocks! The 91 also is bottom guided , big rods, "short wristpen" Mahlie motor where as the 92 is top guided bigrods Mahlie motor, just a thought!:)

That was made on mar 13th 1989. 2.4 200. Pretty simple. 2.5 it is not.

And my '92 XR6 2.5 150 hp carb looked quite a bit different from your motor. I'd guess 2.4 if I was laying down a bet....

Had a bassboat I bought off original owner ( a good friend) He repowered the boat with a 2.5 200 was supposed to be one of the first out.

2.5 came out in 91. That engine appears to be a 2.4 with 2.5 charging and carbs.
