I want to put an air box back on my carbed promax. Is there any difference in how much air flow there is between the different style boxes? I run a sst120 carb plate right now, what kind of box should i use whithout loosing performance. i just want to quiet it down. i must be getting old!!

What you can do is, instead of buying and air box, get a piece of lexan\plastic\etc and bolt it on in front of the carbs, use some stand offs to give you a few inches of clearance so there is plenty of airflow. I did one on my first 2.4 as someone had cut big holes in front of each carb. I think the piece I did was about 6 inches wide and went from the top of the top carb to the bottom of the bottom carb. I used some longer mount bolts with some plastic standoffs and painted the piece black and put a Mercury decal on the front. It actually looks pretty good and knocked the noise down quite a bit.
Just a thought...

got me thinking while i was bending the lexan plate. do the stock air boxes help direct air flow into each carb? did you rejet when you put the plate on? did it hinder the performance at all? i wonder if i should leave the carb plate on also. things to try!
thanks again

I don't really remember having to re-jet but then again, that motor was fairly radical so I was rejetting it all the time anyway. The idea I have about carbs is that you want a bit of a high pressure area in front of the carbs but you don't want to force feed the carbs. They will eat all the air they can get too... Best of luck and take some pics.

Ran the motor this weekend with the lexan plate. I made it about the same size as the carb plate and then bent 2" flares angled toward the rear of the motor. I left the 120 carb plate on and it ran great, just like without the lexan. It definetly looked good, however it is still pretty loud, it changed the tone to kind of a howl. It sounds good, but this is a lake boat that I cruise and ski with so I am still going to try an air box. Anybody got one of the newer style plastic boxes for sale?

Hey Russ, did you get a chance to see if you had an air box laying around?
Thanks

I must have sold it a while back. I looked but I have nothing anymore.
Surely someone has something laying around...
