O' fellow water and speed lovers! Am I right with the assumption that a Mariner and a Merc are the same components, all interchangeable?? So hopping up a Merc 175 2.4L would be the same procedures and avenues as a Mariner 175 2.4L??? I think I'm right on this, but need some hardcore "Yes" answers to confirm it. And, one of these would have more readily parts available, and possibly more potential, then say a 87' OMC looper?? Thanks for the opinions, as I'll be laying down cash from the results of this question! :D
Hardcore YES. same, but gray skin.

The mercury and Mariner 175hp are one in the same. As far as parts and HOP UP potential, the 2.4 are limited with hop ups unless you have steel sleeves installed because the chrome bores are difficult for port work. You can swap front halves, carbs tuners etc and get maybe 210-220 hp but not much more.
Now the 2.7 looper is a totally different animal. You can get 300hp from it and not even try real hard.If you are wanting to build max hp then the 2.4 is not the best choice. They are in my opinion probably the most bulletproof V-6'S ever built but they aren't good candidates for hotrodding.

Hey Man, When you say 2.7 looper, you mean the 1987 200 GT i was talking about maybe buying, right? I spoke to a few guys at the weekend Island hangout, and they all said go with that GT200.

That's correct. The '86-'87 loppers were 2.7 liter. The '88-01's were 3.0's.
