Does anyone know where I can brush up on my merc o/b knowledge? Looking to better understand the different motors over the years (2.0, 2.4,2.5,3.0) and their components.

I'm pretty new to outboards, or at least doing anything other than driving them and would like to learn at least the basics of the merc v6.

I've been browsing the threads picking up some details but was curious if thre is a website or wiki somewhere that details their eveolution, mechanical workings and interchangability. I've wrenched on cars and dirtbikes but want to pickup some info before I start messing with my 150 2.0.

Any links or advice?

Keep reading Brother! This site has a ton of info and you can basically find whatever you are looking for. I dont know of a site that offers what you are asking about, If you find it let us know! I really feel you will find what you need right here.

Good luck,

Brian

Its pretty much all here. I cant think of another website with a larger knowledge data base or more knowledgeable members.

get a couple of the mercury manuals; a 1988 , 1996 and 2002 should cover all you need.

This coming from one of the best minds in outboards... What John was humbly saying is right though. There are books, but there is probably no other place anywhere where you will get the wealth of knowledge that you can find here. There are people on here that you would be blown away if you had any idea who they are.

The really cool thing is everyone here loves outboards, and the folks who have been there and done that, including trying stuff others say cannot be done, come here and help those of us who don't know enough to be dangerous. You could never find what there is here in any book, or have access to the best tech support on the planet. Not to say that a manual is not a great idea (it is), but this site is the best resource you could ever find.

just a suggestion though, try the search function first. For example, I have seen US1 answer the same or similar questions about 2.5 cooling so many times I am amazed at his patients. Don't assume you are the first one it has happened to, someone may have asked the same Q before you. If you can't find an answer, ask away.

Beautiful Sidewinder. Did you restore it yourself?
