Okay i just got my action (copy, i know :D ) and i dont know much about them other than the fact that they are not as popular as my vking was:p . Post pics, setup, speed, power! Details are good :D
Ill start, mine is a 1995 17' action copy made by Motion. Its powered by a tired Johnson that made "225hp" at one point in its earlier lift :p. Bought the boat in holiday florida from an omc dealership. The boats fun as hell to drive although it is alot more flighty at speed then my vking was  its still a blast and theres plenty of room for passengers. Best speed i have seen is 82 on gps with a 29srx but that was at 6900-7000rpm  must have had the motor way too high cause thats a ton of slip

15" mids work, if your thinking of a 7700 limited 280, they have trouble getting on top without setting the low water pressure alarm off.

Back when I grew up in Coral Gables, I'd run from Dinner Key, Coconut Grove across Biscayne Bay to Stiltsville, hang a right just in front of the salt flats and scream across The Ragged Keys, Soldiers Key, Boca Chica Key all the way to the Sand Bar between Elliots Key and Sands Key. It was always challenging & fun avoiding all the shoals. They were some of the best times. If you got out early in the morning and the bay was flat glass, the ride was incredible and you'd always see stingrays, dolphins, turtles, nurse sharks, manatees, etc. but....by the end of the day, while homeward bound, Biscayne Bay could really beat you up good!!!! 2-4 foot nasty, wind whipped, confused chop with boat wakes everywhere can really abuse you.

If you spin a wheel that big, it's gonna be a crappy ride in terms of all around performance. Slow out of the hole and poor mid-range. You're probably best off with something in the 28-29 pitch range. If your're worried about the motor staying together, don't lace into it as much. My dad's old bocks of rocks looper w/about 8 million hours ran strong all day at 5800-5900 rpm pushing a fishing boat.
baja200merk
07-30-2007, 06:02 PM
I'm drilling holes in the leading edge of the bravo one before i go out again, that dam thing seems like its got 40"p when you are comin out of the hole. It needs some ventilation.
Im also bringin the 29srx, you say i should have the prop shaft about an inch above for top end runs right? Its prolly 2 below right now so i could prolly do even better with the bravo if i raised the motor. Bravo ran 73mph with me, my girl and 3/4 tank. Couldnt stay in it long there was a wake coming. Prolly would run 75+ if i could stay in it for more then a 1/4 mile before either running out of water or seeing rollers

Hector, while an 18 Action is capable of speeds over 100mph, especially with a 280, keep in mind that these boats were designed in the early 80's. Long before 100mph boats were common. Give yourself plenty of seat time and make sure you have no play in your steering. Going 100mph in a v-bottom is alot different than a tunnel or mod-vp. As far as set-up with a merc racing motor, I'd ask 1BadAction. He's got a 16 w/280 power. He might be willing to give you a few pointers if he ever puts his boat back together.:p Good luck and be safe.

Si, its done. Im just waiting for my pyros to come in this week and today im starting up the motor. So hopefully my electronics are still good. But worst case ill just put back the stock 2.5 electronics til i get some money to get the hi-po ones again. I had to modify the coils because of the cowling so i made my own plate. Came out sweet!. Didn't get beat up too bad in my boat. Of coarse, mine's a Caddilac compared to the sixteen. I wonder if the Concept Actions just sat low like that. My cousin's rubrail is underwater with a 235 on it, small fuel tank and manual jackplate. I think you'll be fine with the setup you've got now.

I think mine sits a little more then one inch. If you can see where my harness comes out. The diameter of that hole is about three inches and the water started going in through that hole because i was on the back of the boat (driver side) cuz i was having a over heating problem plus the alcohol drinking didnt help. So when i was leaning on that one side i notice my bilge output was underwater and you can see the water trying to push out but i was like " i won't be taking to long" but i guess i was wrong. within a minute or two dont remember i just feel the back of the boat just going down and i was with my girlfriend which didnt know how to swim. well, i told her to jump off the boat so she did Instead of me telling her just put it into drive and dont stop but my fault. she emptied out the cooler and jumped on that. So finally the boat was pretty much underwater and Dave (Action Dave) was pretty far away from us. we waved him down and from there on was ruff. If it wasnt for dave and his dad ive would of been F***ed. i got home around 12-1am. Worst day, hopefully doesnt happen again. Thats my beautiful story.

Your boat is an 18 motion it is alot wider and heavier then the boats that come out of the concept molds. I hung a 235 on the back of my 16 concept and it would take water over the transome if beached or if was moored and a big wake came bye. I was getting fuel in the water one time and two of the bigger ski doos came by half on plane throwing a huge wake luckily I was paying attention and ran up to the bow and hit the bildge pump on the way. I noticed in the pictures you keep alot of stuff in the back of the boat ie, Cooler coat guard gear ect. Try to keep that stuff as close to the front as possible. I used to keep my cooler rite behind the seats just use some kind of clamps to keep it in place, the coast guard gear I kept under the deck behind the kick board this should help distribute some of the weight for you. on 6 gallons of gas or less, odyssey battery in back, mine doesnt take water on. I dont think that OMC case ratchets like a merc case does it? that in itself slows you down faster when you let off the gas, and will make the backwash worse. props do also, some dig deeper than others.

Like Action17 said if you want to keep the cooler behind the seat, just clamp it there. Or get a smaller one. Where is your battery located? When I’m at the beach lots of times I put the cooler and other stuff on top of the bow it makes it easy to get at and keeps the stern up and bow down. You might also think about maybe putting all the hoses through one sealed opening. It seems like you are going about it in the right direction by getting rid of the hydraulic jack, one battery and one trim pump. The light weight cowl is always nice. Simple is best.

My battery is located on the back in the middle but more to the passenger side. My trim pump is located on the driver side. I was thinking of putting all of the wiring, cables, etc into one hose but i decided to put into two because it might stress the bottom pan and snap which ive seen happen. I have my battery between the driver and passenger seats and just like you I have the battery about 1.5 inches more toward the passenger side. Because you have the seat box you might want to try putting it right behind. If you like it there then you could cut an indentation into the back of the box to keep it out of the way or just put it in a battery box. I have also placed the battery between the driver’s and the passenger’s feet but I didn’t like all the weight in the bow. You might though. Like most I put just about anything that would be lying around under the bow. I have the fuel pump and filter on the port side stern and all the electrical and rigging running on the starboard side. I don’t have a transom mounted trim pump. The gas tank is I think 18 gallons and sticks out about four inches in front of the filled in splash well. So there is about 4 inches between the back of the gas tank and the transom. I actually glassed in the second hole in the cowling pan. I never thought about the cowling pan snapping but the extra glass I added to close the other hole should hold it all together. Proper weight distribution is the key. I also think people have their own driving styles and purposes for their boat and need to distribute weight for that style. I need to get a 15 inch mid to lower my center of gravity but I never will.

I have a friend who put a Taylor shortie mid on his OMC and hung it on an 18 Action. The transom is too tall. He had to invert the jackplate to run the motor lower than the transom. I'm just fine with my 20" jacked up to the sky.

I understand what your saying. The day this happend it was 53* outside. I guess the difference would be x-flow to looper. I did however check the prop calculater when I had the STV same prop at 7300 was high 90's also remember the rule of thumb is to prop up with a worked prop meaning a 29 that's worked is figured at a 30.

I put a sportmaster case on this summer and lost about 3.7 mph. I went from 96.7mph to 93mph. The bob’s case was 2:1 7400 rpms the sporty 1:87 6900 rpms both spinning a 32 Lightening ET. I should be going faster then I am with this set up. I know I would lose some speed due to more drag and about 300 rpms due to gear ratio but I was not expecting that much. A friend told me to raise the engine to compensate for the sporty but I forgot how much he said. I think it was 5/8. I just raised the engine prop shaft to 1.5 inches above the pad how does that sound? Should the sportmaster case be run higher then a stock case with a bob’s cone? I have 5inches of setback. Thanks,

Took the Action out today with a friend. We got the boat up to 94mph@7400rpms. Alone the boat should be a few mph faster. Total weight of boat with gear and persons for that trial were around 1550 pounds. Does the speed and slip seem to be about right for that weight? It just doesn’t seem to add up to me. This was with engine 11/2 inches above the pad.
Water pressure was 15psi at wot and 11psi at 4000 rpms. I have no thermostats in the cooling system. The engine was dumping water. Should I raise the motor more? It got up on plane fine. I did have to use a little positive trim for best speed. But that was with the extra person. I would like some opinions on this. I’m thinking of raising it another ¼inch.

With out knowing what your using , 28"pitch with a 1.87 at 7400rpm and 94mph would be 10% slip . Rich Martin 018:D

All that stuff is a couple posts up. But here it is 5 inch setback, 32 lightning ET 1.87 sportmaster.

In that case , It realy sucks . That comes out to 22% slip . but I geuse as long as your making the mph slip doesn't matter . I'd drop the pitch down to a 28" and work on getting it to hook up . It will be alot more fun to drive when it's able to accelorate. Rich Martin 018:cool:

I don't understand why the slip is so high. How does the ET handle weight? I just went to two differnt boat speed calculator sites one says I am about right for that weight the other says my slip is that 22%. I need to run the boat by my self and see what #'s I get. Should the slip go down with out the other person? I have a 29srx but I would have to send it out to be hubed for the fat shaft. I guess if I had less slip I would have less rpms?
baja200merk
09-03-2007, 10:04 PM
94! nice man! your slip sucks but i would think it would go down a bit more with out the passenger. my 29 srx slipped about the same, in the 20s but the motor was 2 inches below and the epoxy on the gear case was about as smooth as a gravel road. Nice numbers though, i have only seen low 80s kinda makes me want a merc

Here are some pics from today. Only one turned out nice. The camara man blamed it on the camera. Hopefully I did this right I've never used photobucket before.
Thanks Baja. The numbers are pretty good I just think there is more. Went out in the boat alone today to get some numbers. I never tried to top her out but did hit 95 multipul times. I looked at the tech at 92 mph and it read 6400 rpms. So that's pretty good. Its amazing what 185 pounds does. Boat should reach 100mph. It's just tough with it being side by side seating. It needs to be a center stear for those numbers. I can feel it tilting to my side when I get over 90. Thats with the battery on the passagner seat. Raising the motor to 1 1/2 above pad made a big differnce. Both with speed and stearing torqe. I picked up 4 - 5 mph with a passange. Still not sure how fast alone but its fast enough for now. I also have less stearing torqe which is nice.

I don't know why you have so many problems planing in your boat. Mine planes easily with 29rx and I'm an inch+ above the pad. I think you have some torque issues with that powerhead. I do have to tuck it in or it won't plane nearly as fast. It'll do a wicked wheelie if I try to plane off trimmed out.

I just don't get it Kevin. You seem to be doing everything right, you're just not getting the numbers you should be seeing. When I first put my boat together, almost 4 years ago, I had one of those "lightning" or "HO" OMC cases that I couldn't jack that high due to lack of lwp. I was running 82mph with the motor buried and a 27 renegade 4-blade.

But as for yours with a 245hp if you run a good cleaver and 6in hyd setback or just a 6in doesn;t really need to be hyd the reason i like the hyd is so i can move the motor at anytime thus i can drop it when i have passenger;s or jack it that last 1/16 by myself at the end to get the last mph;s out of it try a 14.5 x 32 lab clever and 6in setback and a good 245 you should see around 107 to 110 if everything is right also a 15in mid will help alot as lower the center of gavity and getting the powerhear out of the wind stream also lower your seat in the boat and put the steering in the center is a must hope this helps. lotta good info!
as for actions in NY i know theres a 16 action in the yard i used to work at. Its tucked all the way in the back of Rivera's on 72nd st in far rockaway NY. boats got a inline on it and its in tough shape but could be a fun and very cheap project for some one. Let me know if any ones interested ;)
