View Full Version : Honda Del Sol Overheating

I just bought another Honda Del Sol S (1993). I have had the 1993 SI and a 1994 SI.
Just recently it has been reading Hot on the temp gauge. The previous owner changed the thermostat the day I bought it, I drove it from Colorado Springs to Denver with no problem.
When driving from Boulder back to Denver during the afternoon it was reading HOT on the gauge. I am worried if I countinue to drive it with it reading HOT something costly is going to happen. I have change out the Temp senor that controls the gauge and it doesn't help.
I have check to make sure the fan is coming on and it is. The antifreeze is hot and boils over to the over flow tank.
I am at a loss on what to do. I have some mechanical back ground but I am not a mechanic. Does anyone have a suggestion? Do I need to take it in an have a mechanic diag the engine?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rude reply?Dude are you serious? With the trolls and spammers all over the net and this as a first post surely you are jokeing. Most people come here and ask about boat questions in the technical forum.
Since I hurt your wittle feelings I apologise.
Hows this instead?
Hey buddy welcome to scream and fly.:)

Then you know it needs a head gasket! Maybe a head!

Maybe he figured that since Honda makes outboards, someone on here would know about Honda cars.
Come to think of it, I have a Yamaha baby grand that needs tuning...can anyone give me some help?
Seriously though, sounds like it may be a water pump on the Del Sol. If the guy changed the t-stat and it sat without coolant for a while, it could have taken out the pump. They don't like sitting dry. I don't know these motors at all, but know that some motors develope air pockets and won't cool correctly until purged in a specific manner. Might look into this as well.

First change thermostat and flush rad, add all new fluid
If that doesn't work you should try changing the W/P and while your in there change t-belt and tensioner.
if the doesnt work you might be experencing "head lift" you will need to pop the head off and check for level. if its level get new oem head bolts or buy ARP head studs < $75-$85. when you buy the new head gasket make sure you get a 3 layer metal one. They came on 96-00 d16y8 motors ( 96 -00 civic ex) disregard the fact that you don't have vtec the vtec gasket works on non but not vice versa.
it would be a 2.5 hour job and easy diy

after 13 yrs at a honda car dealer i have to go with big al on the head gasket and/or head. the previous owner changed the t-stat for a reason-probably because IT WAS RUNNING HOT! those motors will have head gasket issues with age. doesn't take heat for them to fail. age + heat=problem. you can hook up a radiator pressure tester, start the motor and watch the gauge on the tester. a rapid rise in pressure would indicate a head gasket issue. like 20 psi in 30 seconds. there is also a test kit to check for ex. gases in the coolant. a reputable shop should have one. has a blue fluid that will turn yellow in the presence of ex. gases. if i was a bettin' man, a dime to a dollar says you need a head gasket.

one more thing to add, you need to make sure your rad fan is operating, if its not you can jump the temp switch with a paper clip
also run the car w/o the rad cap installed when it gets hot you will be able to see the fluid circulating, if its not you have a w/p problem
if the water circulating has alot of air bubbles you have a blown headgasket , your head could be warped... from there follow the instructions in my last post
A simple milling of the head will fix any warping issues. You would be surprised how much material you can remove. If you have to remove more then the serviceable amount you can buy thicker gasket to take back up the lost material.

PLEASE show me a couple examples of a low budget 10 second family ride import. I don't mean stripped out CRX's with nothing but a drivers seat and a completely built late model motor with a ton of boost either. I took a American factory 4 door/4cyl car with AC,complete interior, stock longblock motor and on radials to low 12's at over 115 mph. You won't do that with any import that I know of, much less a "factory family ride". I did it on a budget under $1800 and used almost exclusively factory parts, did I mention this hi-po import was a 1986? Yep American cars were pioneers of the import performance market, just something else the Japs had to copy and claim as thier own. Put the crack pipe down, throw out your DVD collection of the fast and furious movies and step away from the PC. :D

10 seconds in the 1/8th mile, MAYBE. ROFLMAO.
Nevermind, you said "import" and "10 second" in the same sentence, you must have been talking 1/8 mile times. http://forums.screamandfly.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

Turn the import flame off guy geez...
In the past I've owned 2 really fast Hondas one turbo one all motor. I've since sold one and the other was stolen .
The turbo car was a money pit, its fastest run was 9.8 sec @ 146 mph. On a good cold day during the first few dyno runs it made 660 whp @ 32lbs and 9,300 rpm.
I have around 22k in it including the cost of the car when it was 2 years old.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c24/gotboostedvr6/2e47bf58.jpg
The all motor car ran 11.1 @ 122. i never could get it to hook properly. It was stroked to 2.2 liter and revd to 11,600 or so. The head flow benched 311 cfm at 15mm, the Built head i ran cost more than any other part on the car :( i only ran this car 8 times before it was stolen

I wouldn't call either of those "factory" or "budget", just doesn't go hand in hand with performance imports. They'll never beat good old fashioned American V8 muscle for that dollar for dollar.

whenever you change the thermostat or get any air in the system you have to let the car run with the radiator cap off until the fan comes on twice(usually 10-15 minutes). that will bleed all the air out of the system and then fill as needed. this is very important to do, air bubbles can get stuck in the water pump impeller and cause intermittent overheating problems. dont know if this will help but you gotta start with the simple things first. man the support on this website is overwhelming once you mention the word HONDA. GOOD LUCK..

It depends what you are doing with the car. If you are auto X or road race i think under 5k you might want to take that back. Even down the 1/4 mile you can make the DSM 1g's really go. Over 500 AWD whp on the stock motor is done alot.
I do agree that there is no replacement for displacement but the small turbo motors go along ways.
It does not matter what you are running it is all about HP to weight and putting the power down when you need it.
:D
