It's time for a new camera. I'm looking at the 1D or maybe the 5D. The 10fps of the 1D sure could be fun.

Any one get there hands on one of these? If so, what do you think?

I've used them all, and even the Mark III. As to be expected, they are awesome cameras. It's my understanding that the Mark III has some autofocus problems that will probably be remedied soon. I think its white balance performance is still indicative of Canon's other cameras - which, in my opinion, is poor. But, it's a pro camera with pro build and performance. Its 10-megapixel resolution may not be considered cutting edge for a new camera in its price range though.

You already have Canon lenses, so the choice for you would be either the 5D or 1D MKIII, unless you want the 30D - in which case you can use the extra money saved on another lens. If you're shooting sports, the 1D MKIII is the way to go. If you want image quality, the 5D may surpass the 1D MKIII, especially in low-light performance.

I'm waiting for Nikon's D3x. :D

I thought the 1D was winning the low light high iso over 5D. I'm hearing roomers about the 7D. If they get it up to 5 fps, That's is were I will end up. I'm sure by the time I let go of the $$$ the AF should be working. WB is not much of a issue for me. I've moved to shooting raw.

Do you have some photos from the 1D III?

John, I have a bunch of raw files from a MKIII on my backup drive somewhere. I'll look.

I'dd like to see what you have. How did AF work for you?

Seemed just as fast as the D2Xs (which was faster than the MKII). Like any pro body though, you better only use pro lenses on it or it will be useless.:)

A bunch of people are meeting at a lake in upstate NY next week - Kruger is coming and he's bringing his Mark III.
As far as I know the autofocus is still a problem, but check out the shots he took this Wednesday:

Thanks for the post. I’m putting 1D off for a little. Give them some time to work it out. Just picked up the 100 to 400L. I'll be giving it a work out at the speed runs at the Sunset in Wi. Next weekend.

Have you used the 10 FPS for the boating stuff, or is it over kill?

John, in my opinion, 8 FPS is overkill for boats. I find 5 to be just right and never use high-speed crop (8). I almost never sit there shooting frame after frame anyway. I usually click off 2-3 frames, then recompose. The "spray and pray" method usually yields a low keeper rate. Anything more and you're shooting movies. I guess there may possibly be a situation where it could help, but I haven't seen it yet. :)

No I havent, I have the camera set at 7fps and going to turn it down more next time out. Greg is on the money there about that.. Only time I might go to 10fps is some rough water pictures to pick the best bottom shots..And i agree, wait on the M3, I put too much faith in canon on that purchase.

Shaun, that's great! I remember seeing that a long time ago - I looked on Ebay for that issue so many times. That is my favorite 22 ever built!

Haha, I'm afraid I'll be staying on the dark side for a while. I really think both Canon and Nikon cameras perform basically the same overall. In my experience Canon's autofocus is a hair faster at acquisition, but Nikon's is a bit better at accuracy and tracking. The differences are all slight though, and I really think only noticeable to someone that has spent a lot of time with both systems. As I said though, overall they are the same. Canon usually wins in better high ISO performance though. I'm waiting for the D3x - that's my next body.

Oh good, its yours. I'm putting an mc-36 10pin remote for your D200/D2x & spare D200 en-el3e battery in there too..I have absolutely no use for that stuff anymore and you might not either but you can keep the remote in your kit just incase. Yea I remember that boat, Kevin had my neighbor Al meet Kerry out there to show him how to drive it fast and keep it on the pad. I went along & took pictures from Al’s 22, find them someday
