Parts availability is better than you think because most parts were also used on v-4 and v-6 looper omc's. There's a ton of them out there and you can get used parts, CHEAP.
They are as reliable as any other same era carbed motor stock once you get rid of the vro.
Only real normal problem is the vro.
100 hours is a couple hundred to a few hundred short of what you should get out of a stocker, provided you run good premix oil and good fuel.
Don't let the v-8 keep you from purchasing the boat. They are pretty much an omc v-6, with two more cylinders, better exhaust design, and bigger lower units.

their weight.

Great motors, tons of potential but very heavy.

As NUTZ said, plenty of parts and cheap.

They are actually two V-4's stacked on top of each other.

As far as expected life......I've torn into a bunch of them with several hundred hrs on them that still ran.

One was just advertised locally and ad said "runs perfect with ONLY 893 HRS!" Al Stoker says 800/900 hrs is common with proper maintenance.

Try that w/a 2.5.

In my opinion they are almost making a come back in popularity. Several people on this site have them and some running pretty good.

With very minor mods/tuning they make a bullet proof 350HP pump gas motor.

Have a friend with one on a 22' Talon. Motor is near stock, turns close to 8K at almost 100.

With good porting you can add 50HP's to those numbers and still be bullet proof.
Only motor on the planet that can do that at that power level.

Another negative though is they are gas hogs.

A lot of that is due to inproper tuning and lack of maintenance at this stage in their lives.

Helped one guy on here get significant economy improvements out of his just by rebuilding/tuning the carbs.

You get somone working on one of these things that doesn't know what they're doing and it will just be added to the list of reasons of why people think they're junk.

I came very close to building one and bolting on one of Wayne Taylors Mad EFI injection systems. The ultimate lake motor!

Not to mention the sound of a V-8 2-stroker running.

Those are just about as far from stock as you can get, short of maybe adding fuel injection.

But they sure do sound nice, don't they?

I had an old 6 banger and replaced it with an 8. I moved it in close to the transom to get the weight closer. Yea these suckers are heavy compaired to the other 2 stokes out there, but still lighter than the 4 strokes of the same power. Here are a couple of pic's, 1 with the 6 and 1 with the 8. That old 8 blows this little boat out of the water, and I'm running a 26" prop. It's hard to see the rubrail with the 6 but it sits out of the water higher with the 8, tucking it in helped a bunch. People see an 8 sitting on the back, they won't even mess with you. I went with a 25" so I could tilt it up when trailering it, other wize it would hit the deck.

There torque monsters, I would spin mine 6500 and run in the low 90,s. Take the VRO off, stock fuel pumps wont last, get a Holley Red. Drill the mid out, they love to breath. An unlimted Pack really made it come to life. They are gas hogs, I could go through 50gal in a couple of hours easy. But if you noticed this is all in the past tense, I was lured to the dark side. It was the hardest decision I have had to make concerning boating. I loved and was know for that moter, plus you dont see that many out there and this one would fly. I was only getting around 150hr on a power head, but I loved to scream it:D . I am hoping with 6 instead of 8 holes I will have better odds. I believe if you run the V8 around 4500 it would last forever barring no fuel problems, spin it at 6500 and your looking at much less.
