How do you adapt a Raker prop to run on a Mercury?

...which are available often as a kit. I have used one to run a Raker up against a similarly pitched Tempest Plus and Trophy Plus on my 150 Opti. The Raker ran pretty good- better top end than the Trophy but not quite as fast as the Tempest. Handling was similar to Tempest but not as good as Trophy. Of course, different rigs may have different results so just use this info as an example. I think the kits are available from DAH propellers currently.

Do they have to be drilled out think I heard that cause I would love to run on my baja. Thanks Rick

When you want to fit a merc prop on an omc you have to drill it out! But not the other way round i guess?

Instead, you have the opposite problem- the prop goes in too far and on a hubbed prop you will jam the hub against the gearcase. Hence the kits which include a much thicker hub washer- to move the prop back, and a thin nut - so you have enough threads engaged to hold the prop on. The downside is that you end up with only about 3/8 inch of spline engagement, which sounds scary, but I've had no problems with this running a Raker on a Merc.

I just put a raker on a merc. I used the stock raker thrust washer and then added two 1" ss flat washers as spacers. I cut down a merc prop nut to about 1/2" thick and used a flat washer between the prop and nut. I also used locktight in addition to the cut down locknut, just to be safe. Seems to work fine.

Call DAH props...they have a kit which has the thick thrust washer and a cut prop nut that will get the nylock on the threads. Rakers run good top end but absolutely suck out of the hole and acceleration.

I called DAH but they no longer sell them.Thats where I got the idea to try one out.How much thicker is the Raker washer than the Merc washer?

I run a Raker on my '97 150 EFI. If I recall correctly, the prop had to be cut down some in order to fit. The diameter of the thrust washer is a different size compared to one for a Tempest or Trophy. I'll try to find out where the work on the prop was done.

Performance will vary depending on the hull. My boat is a '97 Gambler Outlaw (bass boat). The Raker out performed both a Tempest and a Trophy all the way around. Hole shot is very good, even with full live wells. I found that it had a little more stern lift than either of the other 2 props. Top end was around 2 mph faster than the Tempest and around 4 mph faster than the Trophy. Again though, hull design will probably make a big difference.

If DAH does not sell them, someone else ought to.

Does anyone know if some other prop shop does?

Marcus,

Were you able to find anyone who sells the kit?

My current solution is to use a large washer between the propeller and the nut, and then use some spray on the threads to prevent the nut from loosening. Not the optimal solution, but it works.

.....from stainless steel should be available from Land&Sea Performance- they have a web site and list the thin nut as an accessory for their old Torque Shift line of props.
