Has anyone ever heard of using ATF automatic transmission fluid in their lower unit instead of gear lube ? I've heard about this through the "grapevine". Any truth to this working and how well it works ?

I've heard of manual transmissions in cars using auto fluid but they were built to use it. If I put it in my manual I'll have a junk box.

I think the same holds true for LUs. They aren't being built to use it so you would ruin it. The gears are also very tiny compared to a car and also about twice the rpm for the same or more hp.

If nothing else there are the seals!

I used to do it drag racing ( hopefully getting every edge ) but I would change it EVERYDAY at the races and when I go home I would fill with regular 90 weight LU lube.. ( I wouldn't use ATF as there are some VERY good alturnative low weight lube on the market today designed for LU that is IMO killer )

IMO :If I wanted to go thin to get more rpms I'd use the new "0" weight gear lube from Alsyn its BULLETPROOF most of the drag racers sware by it..

BTW Its ( All Alysn products) on sale for free freight if your a S & F er..Food for thought !

Good luck,

I have a question on this... Is there any difference between automotive gear oil (80-90wt) synthetic and reg lower unit gear oil...? Expansion or lube properties...? This is just concerning a reg fishing motor lower not the hipo units... Also interval of change...?

thanks...

A few years back, I got automotive 75W90 synthetic gear lube instead of the marine 75W90 synthetic gear lube that I had ordered from a supplier.

The SKU numbers on the two products were very close, so before returning it to the supplier, I checked with the manufacturer's tech support. The manufacturer said that the automotive and marine products were identical.

The OEM gear lubes on the other hand might contain more additives to dissolve water, but then you don't even get a synthetic.

To me, the choice is clear: Synthetic gear lube. If it says marine on the bottle, good. If it doesn't, it is no big deal.
