What is the strongest loctite you use to make a bolt permanent and NOT come out? I have looked all over the net and it appears that#638,640 and 648 are the best. #648 is the strongest? I am very confused. I am going to be putting stuffer blocks in a 2.5 and I don't want them coming loose. Give me some input guys..:D Thanks Russell

I use a large gamit of Loctite products in my engine building chores.
I've used Loctite Numbers :
620 - Retaining compound for crank races ( high build ,thick viscosity )
262 - For most ALL bolts on Mercurys except head bolts ( high strength )
680 - Retaining compound for cranks ( low build , thin viscosity )
272 - For bolts that need high strength with high temps
242 - Med. strength for some exterior low impact bolts
518 - Red Gel Seal on "O" rings and split case halves

I'd think the 262 on a cold side service ( fuel side ) would be sufficent after all they hold rod bolts in ( the most stressed bolt on an engine...)

Most stuffer blocks that I've seen installed in the floor of the bores are welded in... Check with Chuck Goodman he makes and sell them I bet he could steer you in the correct instilation method that would be motor safe....

I've heard that locktite injestion through skin contact/absorbtion can cause EXTREME physical abnormalities including shortness in height as well as in specific body parts.:D :D :D

I know a guy who fits at least part of that description… maybe the rest of it too? :D :D :D

He has been known to even taste the rod bolts to see if they had Loctite on them. :)

Loctite made some for the VW's I work on to hold the flywheel bolts on. It's green in color and the only way the bolts come out is if they are heated.

Call any VW dealer and ask for parts department to see if they know. I'm not at work now but this maybe the part number D-000-600. Will try to check Monday...

What's the number equivalent to the "loctite grade A" that Merc commonly recommends?

Jay Smith

Loctite #271 is what the book says the ID for product called "B"

Product called "A" is 2-4-C Marine Lubricant ( grease)

Another Loctite product is called "G" and its ID is called loctite primer "T"

Last Loctite product I found on entire engine is ID ed as "I" and it is Loctite #35

Good luck,

Here's the quote
I used 262, but was wondering what "A" was exactly................

New products are coming out from loctite with different numbers often, they make a ( new to me ) high bolt strength product that is numbered 272 which is just for bolts that need high strength with high heat, kinda of creamy pink colored. Also the lipsticks loctite that is the same as the high torque bolt product only in a lipstick tube..I think 262 superceded 271 might be wrong BUT thats what my loctite dealer lead me to believe when I bought high strength red last time...

go figure,
