Hey I want to set the timing on my XR6 to 25* to get a little more power but is it supposed to be 25* at cranking speed with the max advance held to its stop or is that with it actually running at wot if it is supposed to be 25* set with the engine running at wot how do you get the engine to max advance and still be able to set the timing? Thanks

Anyone??????
You can do it at cranking speed with the throttle held wide open, but this will only work if your motor doesn't use advance modules, which the XR6 does from the factory. In this case, the wot cranking/full advance is set lower, something like 18 degrees, since the full advance only kicks in at 5500 rpm. There is also a detonation control on some motors as well. After removing all of the advance/retard modules for high speed advance, idle stabilization, etc, then the motor can always be reliably be timed without worrying about extra components interfering or malfunctioning. Race motors don't have timing modules, there's a reason why.
If your motor has all the stock advance modules, then you would have to do a trailer test at the ramp with a test wheel with the motor held at the top of its factory rated RPM range and the timing lever at full advance in order to fully test the WOT timing.

What kind of advance modules are there on these motors the only thing I see is the idle stabilizer the motor is a 94 model did these have anything else. I set it to almost 22* or 23* will I gain anything by setting it to 25* I just want a little more:rolleyes:. I keep hereing different stories some say that the idle stabilizer retards timing over 5600 some say it does nothing but help idle. Im running 63mph with a trophy 25 pitch at 5800 rpms will removing the stabilizer help anything or am I just waisting time. Just need help getting that extra 2 or 3 mph.

There was a multitude of timing modules. Functions included idle stabilize, (advance timing below a set rpm), Advance, (Advance the timing at high rpm), Advance (retard the timing at higher rpm). and almost any combination of these. None are sold my murkery anymore. Concensus is to throw it out and time it where you want it.
hope it helps

Where woulde I find these modules ive looked at all the common places and all I see is the idle stabilizer the only thing left is the switch boxes coil packs and what looks to be a resistor inline with one of the wires coming from the shift safety switch. ive traced just about all other wires as well

Usually there is only one or two. Functions are sometimes combined in one module.
Any stray wires connected to the bias terminals, (the one usually jumpered between the switchboxes) would lead to one.
hope it helps
