Scream And Fly

Here's the deal everyone - regardless of which end of the debate you find yourself on this issue, lower units that are cracked or repaired at the skeg any other stress point are not permitted for sale on Scream And Fly.
So, to be clear:
Modified Sportmaster (within reason)? OK
Repaired anti-cavitation plate? OK
Cracked or repaired skeg? NOT OK
Those units are dangerous and should either be used on slow fishing boats or scrapped.
Thanks,
Greg

Nosecones are fine, so are minor modifications to the skeg, like an "Allison cut".

Isn't this really a Mercury issue?
Someone told me that welding an OMC skeg was no problem because of the different alloy. Then again, maybe those OMCs stayed below 50 mph...

Welded skegs are ok for motors that are mounted low or Non Surface Piercing.I tried it once and it was done by one of the best prop shops here in Jax.It's routine to weld props but it's still for fishing boats.
Every welded skeg I've seen so far on the suface has cracked again.I was running a friends boat with my wife and son.Left the ramp and ran up to about 80 and backed down to 50 and it broke just before I went under the bridge.Instant left turn that threw my son across the boat into the side.He was 3.Another 5 seconds we wouldn't made it in the doubled concrete pilings.
I like to go fast, well I like to go fastest and I'm not scared but that scared the hell out of me.Taking my family out of this life runs through my mind every time I think of a welded skeg on a single engine performance boat.Think about it.

Good deal. This may save someone (or lots of people) lots of problems and injury.

I have heard of Merc L/U with a welded on torque tab have had problems cracking, but have not on OMCs. BTW Mine goes faster than 50 mph. ;)

Forking, here ya go. This was the last OMC case that I ran on th STV before doing the sporty conversion. This omc welded(bobs) tab was only ran a few hours. only ran up to mid 90's

That this is only a Merc issue is just a myth, then...

Thanks. I have two of them, and I do inspect them regularly.

welded skegs no matter what manufacturer made it or who did the welds are dangerous on the surface. Glad to see this become a rule here.
