i just purchased a mazcone for my CLE. im plannin on installin it this week. i checked titus and saw how he does his cones. it appears that he uses the original water pickup chambers instead of tappin and usin a hose. my question is can i also do that with the mazcone? i know i have to seal weld the cone and also drill the water passages out of the mazcone to make this work. has anyone else done this? i gotta admit im a little nervous about whacking the cle nose off. again im open to any expert advice from someone who has done this themselves and any lessons learned or tips that will help.
thanks
matt
It can be done but I doubt that you have the skills.:D

Interesting. You should take your own advice then maybe you could get a motor to stay running. Perhaps a simple Chizler for a Simpleton! Scab:D

well have installed several cones my first one was a land and sea with the hose on the wrong side and epoxied on or at expoxied on since then (several years ago) ive learned a few things .I had jc put one on my bullet case in 1995 to see how it was supposed to look Tooter was working for him and he bought him out much like Titus bought Tooter out so theres a lot of experience at Titus's place. i bought my own wire welder for the work it is a must and me having a life time of welding experience helped a lot. ive seen them cut the cle nose off and weld them back on . i suppose they have a jig for that ive built one my self it makes it a lot faster .i am wondering if any water gets trapped in the cavity under the add on nose or has it been designed to eliminate that? all ive put on are Bobs cones and they are good but it has a big cavity inside im not quite sure what is done on it if any thing, the water basiclly comes in at the bottom on both units im uncertian how it gets from A to B ive been enclosing my water hose (its hard pipe then) they look good but not as cool as a cle windowplate set up . ive got 2 old cle case i may get in too one of those just to see whats up thanks B.V.

thanks B.V. for response. ive whacked the nose off the cle to just beyond the low water pickups. the mazecone im planin on usin aint exactly what i hoped it'd be. the diameter of the cone is too large an the taper is not exactly where i think it should be for the cle case. its probably more fit for a sporty. to get the cone diameter to line up with the cle im way past the oil drain plug. this is not what i was lookin for. i was expecting the cone to mate up near the water pickup without over lapping so dang much. i could trim the cone but then what do you really gain? i can make it work though. thanks again for your insight.

do you have any idea what a Scab is? obviously not! just so you know a person who crosses a union picket line to work is referred to as being a scab. i have never done this, thus i am not a scab. educate yourself or attempt to find another moronic name to call me that may, in your mind at least, intimidate me.
and btw im still laughin at you not with you.:D

i just put a bobs on my cle, there is a large gap in the front(between the cle housing and the cone), i filled it w/ resin and microballoons, the drain on the cle is about 3/4" from the cone, use a bolt and hose piece the same diameter as the drain screw to keep the hole open, i used the bob's epoxy for the filler, and i use a longboard for most of the sanding tasks, i also had the cone welded on and filled the pocket below the water pump w/ resin, hope this helps- also- i had to cut the cle nosecone off

thanks for that info. i was hoping that i wouldnt have to cover the drain hole at all but if i do ill use this. what was the overall lenght of lower unit with the cone on it? do you remember? i know that too long aint good (too much drag) and that too short aint good either. thanks again.

had the same problem. i have a mazcone as well. what i did is built it up level on the leading edge then let it gradually taper away on the back side so the water had nothing to hit on the back side of the drain hole. (teardrop). thought it might be a little mo better than the water blasting the back side. i think it will save the paint aswell.

You can fill in the lube drain hole with silicone so it is flush with the surface of the cone/case. This keeps the water from catching the trailing edge of the drain screw opening. When it is time to drain and fill the case ya just take an exacto knife and cut out the silicone "plug".

thanks for the replys. i was hopin to not have to go crazy with the epoxy but it looks like it may be necessary after all.

I just bought a very clean near new CLE to replace the Bob's nose coned stock 1995 200 hp EFI Steel sleeve Lower unit.
I am building a nice 2.5 aprox 280 hp so I bought the CLE to handle the Bigger HP.
I want to set the boat up to be as fast as possible 90--100 mph-why do you install a new nose on a CLE low water pick-up style??
The CLE Crescent Leading Edge lower unit seams to have a nice shape. Can you fill me in on any short-comings that the CLE lower unit has.
I am totaly new to CLE lower units. The one I got is near perfect with a new housing and a stock staight skeg. I have flat boarded the whole case and will be repainting and then Wet sand the surface to a nice dull mat finish. I have been thinking about a torque Tab but hate to weld into a new case??
I would appreciate any tips.
Thanks,
James

CLE water inlet problem is it one or not ? After you cut the cone off the CLE you will have the water passage exposed or a hole looking right at you!! if you add the Bobs cone the water inlet on the Bobs is encased in a passage way connected via water hose at the top of the case so unless there is a connection between the two how do you get water thru to the Cle water passage all ready in place??? It doesnt look like it unless you plug the Bobs and connect it some how at the bottom of the Bobs in the same area of inlet on the Cle just curious it does not look like any real good way to do it ? drill a hole in the Bobs on the inside so it will feed the Cle inlet Or ?????????  and as for the case itself The cle in itself is a great case on some hulls but its the worst case of all on a Bullet the case is too short But for some hulls its just right. My favorite case is a Torqmaster with a Bobs on it Its the best of both worlds hard gears Big bearing shaft long nose and it does not hunt on the top end like a Sporty .............................IMHO:D

James what hull you doing this on?? the case your describing (standard with bobs) is a great case ill take it any time over a cle on my hull if you have a early cle with reg gears its just like a fishing mota case id also like the fishing mota case better with hard stuff for big horse power so it would last a little longer;)

yes thats exactly what i did. i cut the nose off, and drilled a hole in the new nose cone to allow the water to travel straight thru to the orginal water passages. ill seal up the water passage in the cone that goes to the hose connections.

Thanks for the feed back I will be building a 1973-17' Sidewinder, Been doing studying the JD Russell "CONTROLED FLIGHT" Theories and Have had some guiedence from John Marles in building HP. Just tryin to have fun sneaking to 100. It's great to hear people whove been there (or close)
The Sidewinder will have airfoils "Allison style" for stability at speed. (I'v heard follow the best), Step pad style transum, and a pad on the V.
And then go from there if the hull has a peak speed below what I want I'll sell the bitch and buy a used Allison or STV.
Speed make me smile :)
