Were all of these motors built for endurance or were some built for drags? Can you run 93 octane or do you need to run race gas? Thanks, Jimbo1

Do you have one of these motors?

:) No, I was looking at the one on ebay recently and the guy was somewhat vague about the specs.

The ones I have seen apart are beautiful inside. Everything is nice and strong and looks to be good for 10K+ rpm.
BUT
Every true F1 I have seen has over 200 pounds of compression (when the rings are good) and will need at least 110 octane gasoline and lots of it.
About those piston rings, they are real suspect with a short life. The rings are very soft and easy on the cylinder walls, but I am sure after a 100 lap race, they were toast.
You gotta remember the true F1's were RACE motors that were taken apart often for maintainence. I doubt in their stock form many people would like them for anything but racing.
I am somewhat sure, the Offshore version had lower compression. Some say there were around 20 of these actually sold. I have never seen one except in pictures. They have twin pinion shiftable gearcases. There is a guy from AZ that posts on here that has a 32' Skater with twin F1 V8 Offshores. I guess they are still called "F1".
The worst part about these motors is there are no parts available for them. Once they break, anything must be custom made ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$) to repair them.

"Offshore" version and it is rated at 390 HP and rated to run "regular" fuel!!
Rev range spec'd as 7K to 8250.

I believe that Greg Jacobson (Sea-Way marine ) has the tooling and any left over omc parts. He is the one doing the OMC V6 F1 project. Sure would cool if he brought the V8 F1 back to life.

The motors were originally built for endurance racing, not drag racing and it was expected that you would tear it down after each race, so it wouldn't be a good motor for your average weekend warrior... as far as fuel, remember these motors were designed to run on leaded fuel...
weren't the F1 v 8 cranks to be replaced after 10hrs?

Buddy in Ohio has one of the most badd ass O/B's on the planet which is a F-1 V-8 on an ancient STV Pro Comp Sprint Bottom.
He 's had it I think over 10 yrs and has not been down since he assembled it.
Rode in it 2 yrs ago and the thing accelerates from 6K to 9K w/o breathing hard!
Saw the best example of it's brute power at Rumble I when he was running besides a buddys OMC/Euro which was WFO @ about 105.
The F-1 nailed it from that speed and just dissapeared!
He was turning 6200 while pacing the Euro.
It will turn 10K!
When dialed and driven properly there is NOTHING like one!
