You should handle them as much as possible when young, try not to use a leash and scocialize them with children as well as other dogs as often as possible when young. If you do these things you will have a tedy bear. They are great protectors of the home and family.
A neighbor of mine had one which was very over protective. When ever my dog was in the yard he would intentionially let his out. He would run to the fence growl and bark at my dog because his owner condoned it. I tried to get the guy to take his dog for walks with mine to aquaint them but the guy perfered a vicous dog. One day the poor dog got under the fence. He didnt have a chance. I felt so bad for that dog, he was only doing what he thought was right due to an asshole of an owner. Not to mention the guy was affraid to help brake the dogs. A small fortune at the vet woke the moron up a little, however the poor dog was allready set in his ways, in the right hands he would have been a great dog.

PIT BULL is correct! We have 2 Akitas, and just had a litter of 5 pups.(7 weeks old.. which I might add, are for sale to the RIGHT owners)

Our male was socialized when young, and does his job VERY WELL. If he is out at your house, he will be mannered. If you are out at his house, he will let you know it. He protects his ground, but not to the point of being vicious. Akitas require alot of time. They are NOT an animal you can leave alone, or tie on the end of a chain. They are clean, protective, and friendly.

Our female, she is a "horse" of a different color. Since she has Buca, the male, to protect her as well as us, she LOVES everyone, and everything!

All large breed dogs need to be respected. All can be friendly, and all can be made mean. I won't call myself an EXPERT on Akitas. But, we have learned ALOT about them in the 7 years we have had them. Be sure of what you want when bringing any animal into your lives. They can be your BEST friends, or your WORSE nightmares!

Nice looking pit...our Taz is white...looks like a dalmation when he gets washed....he's 13 and somewhat overweight but anything that is parked in the backyard will definitely be there when you get home....if properly introduced he's fine with strangers but don't reach for that gate if we're not home.....with family and friends he's a teddy bear...loves attention and snacks....guess that's where the somewhat overweight comes in.....all dogs need to be instructed in manners and what is expected of them...any breed can become vicious but pitts, rottweilers and other tough breeds can inflict more damage and thereby receive more publicity...there are no bad dogs...only bad owners....:D :D

been around several Akitas, only one mean one. Best friend's little girl woke her up late at night while she was getting a glass of water. The 2 were raised together since she was a baby, the dog bit her on the head so hard it required stitches, they gave it one more chance & it bit her again. They had it put down & a month later bought another Akita pup. This was 6 years ago, the new dog has been no problems at all.......................

Now me, I prefer German Shepherds.........................

This is Taz, 6 month old Shepherd (American)

this is my new baby (MINE, ALL MINE) She is from East Germany, quite different from the American bred ones, all her lineage are Schutzhund Champions. She will have to be well trained to keep her in line. Taz is the family dog (read: wife's)

This is Gherta Shadow Vom Dinkla at 3 months
