In 1990 the Merc on The Toy drag hydro I saw dyno printouts that showed 502 horsepower. That was with drag mods and two stages of nitrous. This was years after I set the 1/4 mile record of 133.92 MPH in 8.51 seconds. Remember the objective in drags is acceleration/quickness or elapse time (ET), thats what wins races, not top speed. When the records were set in 1985 we were producing around 375 on one stage. By the way, in '90 I never touched the second stage of nitrous, as the boat was already overpowered with the first stage. Again remember the engine only runs for eight and a half seconds at a time.

What is the advantage in locking the motor and streering with a rudder?

Hey dont forget that the speed of 176 MPH was a two way average over a mile! that boat actually achieved maximum speeds around 186 MPH and they had an objective of 200 MPH. Pretty amazing stuff! Does anyone know if there is anyone going to have a shot at this record in the near future, this is now 20 years on and we still cant get near it!

Didn't it have something to do with the skeg breaking off at high speed. Or the skeg being made of aluminum and only about 3/8" thick at the thickest part.

David Carver has a new Pugh hydro in his garage, and he told me he wants to do 200. He has the ODBA records @ something like 8.9 sec and 140 mph. I think if Skywalker ever really decides to try he can do it.

I've been rootin' for David to give it a serious shot ever since he told me he was going to at Jasper................ must've been 6 or 8 years ago now.

Locked motor/rudder: Skegs made of alum can break off at high speeds and obviously at over 150 it would likely be deadly. The rudders are usually made of stainless and can be made much stronger.

As far as the record boat in the ceiling at Race Rock in Orlando............ the common rumor seems to be that it was a replica or at least a backup boat owned by the same people and NOT the actual record boat. Several months ago there were multiple posts here that Race Rock was closing and all the memorabelia was being auctioned off including the V8 powered boat. I never heard anything else about it, but assume that it's happened by now.

True........but after 20 years, the human "balls" factor is still there. That's fast on water my friend, and it takes a special kind of person to get behind the wheel to get it done. There will always be the guys who might boast they could do it, but closin' the canopy and gettin' it done is a different story.

I dusted off a DVD I have called "Assault on the Record!" "The story of the fastest outboard Powered Boat in the World!" which was an 18 minute Mach Performance Inc. promotional video memorializing the record run. Its obviously a big buck operation to survey and set the traps, close off a course venue, mobilize the support crew etc. etc.

Its not like that little boat runs on rails. If you look closely you can see it shimmys side to side as it blasts by. I would think it would be with a sigh of relief not to have to go back out to defend that record.

The Mach Performance Inc. video is not my property to post to the public domain. I was thinking to ask Reggie but I goggled and see that Fountain's 1997 merger with Mach Performance Inc. was rescinded. The Mach Performance Inc. company was administratively dissolved more than 10 years ago so who to ask?

I am sure that someone named Garbrecht has a VHS copy, but I converted the video to a digital format. Happy to give it to my Greenville NC neighbor for posting to save further expense, but could Hammer Down Racing get permission first?

Oh yea, if someone in N.C is serious about a go for the record, and they need something black, laminated with epoxy, I'm in.

Searched and found that Bennett Marine Video produced and
sold the VHS original version. Not currently available but...

If there is enough demand they could re-release it for sale.

That might be the same video that was run on the discovery channel, so you might want to make sure you have permission first to avoid any copyright problems... Talk to Bart, because the copyright might of been owned by Gary and as such might of expired with his passing or if it's in his company name Bart would probably have the ability to release it or know who does...
