Well it looks like my radar detector is shot...blown speaker. Looking for input.... what brand do you use etc.? I guess I am looking to find one with a scrambler and pop detection. I have owned bels and escorts in the past...anyone one have anything new or a feature that they like??

Chimmin' in just so I can see the later replies.

I need to upgrade mine too.

Do the scramblers really work?

Also, this is what we have wondered lately as far as "Coast Guard" Radar detection goes.

My thought was, if the radar on the Coast Guard boats could be "detected" as they approach, then you would know to throw you anchor out, or "haul ass" before they get there.

After getting pulled one night, (while floating, NOT anchored) it would sure be cool to know they are getting close to you.

Heres a funny thought for ya
New Hampster is thinking about a speed limit....How about putting one in your boat?? since theres no obstuctions the signal will carry a Very long way..you may not see them but at least you know that they are there!!

my escort 8500 is just as good as the val1 or vis versa. roy has a offer of $xxxxx for a scrambler that really works. so far hes not paid out the money. either the val1 or the escort are very good units. i went with the escort because you can turn the X radar off. that elimnated 90% of false warnings.

I was told that the Coast Guard Radar was a different frequency than police radar, anybody know?

(I mean the actual radar they use to "see" what is in front of them, not for catching speeders)

That would kinda kick the 'ole "catch them coming with a police radar detector" thing square in the ass.

Boat radar is nowhere near the same freq as police radar. 2 different animals. Just put marine radar in your boat and you'll be able to see when another boat is coming.

Thats what I thought.

If we could get some "electronics guru" to take an old (police) radar detector, and re-wire it to pick up Coast Guard radar, that would eleminate the 'ole, "is that the law" ? /false alarm/or get busted syndrome

(edit) sorry for stealing the thread, thought it might fit in with the same discussion.

I have an escort 8500 also and it works very well. Unfortunately, lots of LEO around here are now using laser, and although it will detect it, by the time you hear it, you may as well reach for your wallet, registration and insurance card.

I have heard nothing but good about the valentine too, but never used one.

yea thats what i hear about lazer. I hang with a bunch of cops in florida they say by the time you have them on the detector they have you on the lazer

You can turn off or change the sensitivity to any band on the V1 as well.

when they are using laser don't they still have to be sitting still? not sure how far down the road they would be set up but keep an eye on the road..

Yep, they sit still. They don't run laser out here, but in FL they do. Had my V1 with me on vacation last time and got a laser hit just before a bridge on the Turnpike. About 20 seconds later, passed an unmarked in the emergency lane of the bridge shooting laser.

Thanks for the info, here in mich. the state police have a 40 mile a day max driving restriction so they use that pop laser radar, sitting on the side of the road with the window down. Looks like a black shoe box they are aiming.....hey maybe they are using a shoe box....and I have nothing to worry about! Though not willing to take the chance yet. Just looking to upgrade...I will check out the links. Greg.

man these guys around here use every kind of vehicle you can think of. all kinds of fords from stangs to mercury marauders, expeditions, caddys, ls1 camaros, tahoes, etc etc. Normally the only way to tell they are LEO is by the 5% limo tint on the windows including the windshield. any normal person that has that kind of tint is busted in no time, but since they are cops they are above the law.

1Bad, you guys have it tough in Fl. Here in Okie land we don't have enough hiway patrol so for the most part they have to keep em movin..I think in 20 years I have been hit with laser 1 time, and that could have been an error..

We don't have laser here in my area, but I have noticed that if I am driving into the sunset, my cheap-o Uniden will alert to laser.

I guess they are really more along the lines of infrared than laser?

If I shine a "real laser" into the detector, it wont alert.

Thanks for the replies. I broke down and ordered a new Valentine radar detector today. I will give it a try. I have owned the bels and the escorts before, so this will be my first Valentine. According to the posts and my research I should be pleased with it. I will post in the future after I use it for a bit. Thanks Greg.

my favorite laser argument is when they laser from the side of the road and dont sweep through..... physics wins EVERY time..... if it aint straight on it aint a lock...... i dont care WHAT type of detection equipment it is.... NO varifiable lock... no good. and Yes I ask...

and if they refuse i ask how well they can defend GPS.. so far none of the courts can argue when a speedometer is pictured with a GPS right next to it displaying the speed I said i was going, its REALLY hard for the officer to prove a lock at 69 when a GPS shows a maximum speed traveled of only 63..... instant drop.... due to untuned equipment.

your gonna have to explain this.. how does the judge know that you didnt reset the gps after you got pulled over and did 63 home???

Great that is just what I want to do argue with the leo on the side of the road, with my gps. Oh, maybe he will not show up for the court date either.

I take the picture BEFORE i stop, show the officer the GPS and the photo... its hard to argue with the MAX speed display.... its gotten me out of 7 so far......
