WENT OUT TODAY AND PERFORMED A LITTLE TROUBLE SHOOTING
ON WATER PROBLEMS AS I AM EXPERIENCING THEM MYSELF. I
HAVE FOUND NO ANSWER BUT MAYBE GREG WILL HELP WITH THAT
IN HIS ARTICLE. I WAS NOT SURE IF I WAS PUMPING GOOD
THROUGH MY IMPELLER SO I ELIMINATED THAT QUESTION
TAKING OFF MY GEAR CASE AND HOOKING MY HOSE PIPE
STRAIGHT TO THE COOLING TUBE. WATER COMES FROM BOTH
HOSES BUT NO PRESSURE ON WP GAUGE. THINKING BLOCKAGE
IN GAUGE LINE SCREWED GAUGE STRAIGHT TO BLOCK IN THE
HOLE LOCATED IN CENTER OF EXHAUST PLATE. STILL NO
PRESSURE. HOOK GAUGE STRAIGHT TO HOSE AND IT WILL PEG.
SEEMS AS THOUGH WAY TOO MUCH WATER COMMING FROM
HOUSING COOLING DUMP HOSE. NOT SURE EXACT GPM BUT IT'S A
TON. IF THE PUMP IS PUMPING WATER WHY DOES IT NEED TO BE
COOLED. IT HAS TO BE COOLING THE HOUSING BECAUSE THAT IS
THE FIRST THING THE WATER SEES. CAN THE DUMP HOSE BE
PLUGGED W/OUT PULLING THE POWERHEAD? SEEMS LIKE THE FIX
WOULD BE GREATLY REDUCE HOSE DIA. BUT LENGHTEN IT TO
SPRAY DIRECTLY ON HOUSING.(LIKE COOLING A MECH SEAL
W/WATER). SURE HOPE GREG HURRIES AND HELPS.

I sent it to Greg Terzian weeks ago and he has not posted it yet. I am not sure what you are talking about. Housing cooling dump hose? hose pipe to cool water pump? do you have a digital camera to show what you are talking about? If you have water flowout of the dump hoses on the t-stat housings you should have pressure at the exhaust plate it is first in line before the t-stats.

Greg is right -

It's me - just been so overloaded with work and formatting. Greg sent me the article a while ago.

I'll get it up ASAP.

I just saw your name in the COMING SOON title on the first page. Anyway my motor is a 2.5 260 and the housing I'm refering to is the water pump housing. I see in another post below this where they are talking about dry stacking. Don't know if this is in reference to my post or not.
I hooked my home hose pipe which has at least 60-70 psi directly to the water inlet tube in the bottom of the center section and turned it WAO and it would pee through the hole that the gauge hooks to but not at any significant pressure. I know gauge works cause I hooke the hose to my water pressure gauge line and it works fine. THANKS FOR RESPONCES, NOW I NEED SOLUTION.

I did a search for your original description of the problem, and I could not find it. Could you restate exactly what the symptoms are?

260's dump a lot of water out the bottom and don't see much water pressure, until they get going.

What is your pressure at high speed? Is the motor modified in any way?

YOU ARE CORRECT. BUT I THINK THE DUMP HOLE DUMPS TOO MUCH. AT HIGH SPEED THE GAUGE STILL DOES NOT WORK. I KNOW ITS NOT THE GAUGE. I TESTED IT STRAIGHT FROM MY GARDEN HOSE THROUGH THE GAUGE HOSE TO THE GAUGE. IT TESTED FINE. I'M ALMOST 100% SURE THIS MOTOR IS STOCK. DOES THE DUMP WATER DUMP THROUGHT A GASKET OR DOES THE DUMP HOSE CONNECT DIRECTLY TO BOTTOM OF BLOCK. IS THERE ANY WAY THE DIVERTER TUBES IN THE BLOCK COULD SHIFT AND CAUSE THIS. I GUESS I'LL PULL THE HEADS AND CHECK THEM OUT.

JUST CAME IN FROM REMOVING POWERHEAD AND FOUND SOME INTERESTING THINGS. SEEMS AS THOUGH MERC IS WAY TOO CONCERNED ABOUT COOLING THE EXHAUST AND NOT SO CONCERNED ABOUT THE DAMN MOTA. RIGHT WERE THE INLET TUBE COMES TO THE BOTTOM OF POWERHEAD THERE IS A TRIANGULAR CAVITY. ON TOP OF THIS CAVITY IS WHERE THE GASKET GOES. THIS IS WHAT I CAN'T BELIVE. ON THE GASKET THERE IS 1-HOLE ABOUT 2" IN DIA AND 2-HOLES 1" IN DIA. TO FEED POWERHEAD WATER. BUT THERE IS ALSO 2-SMALL HOLES FROM THIS CAVITY SENDING WATER TO EXH/WATERPUMP. THAT WOULDN'T SEEM SO CRAZY BUT THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL FOUR MORE 1" AND 2 HOLES THAT ARE 1/2" OUTSIDE OF THIS TRIANGULAR CAVITY THAT SEND SPENT/HOT WATER ALSO TO THE EXH/WP. THESE HOLES I'M REFERING TO ARE IN THE GASKET BUT HAVE SMALLER HOLES GOING TO THE EXH. IT SEEMS THAT SOME OF THESE MUST BE CAPPED/PLUGGED TO BUILD PRESSURE. ALL YOU SHOULD NEED IS THE WATER THAT IS ALREADY SPENT. NO NEED FOR THE FRESH WATER? ALSO MY CENTER SECTION IS AN OFFSHORE SO THE EXH EXITS QUICKLY. I'M GOING BACK AND READ THAT OTHER POST ONE MORE TIME I THINK I HEARD SOMEONE PLUGGING THE FRESH WTR HOLES.

needs a drain hole so that the water will not be trapped inside the motor and freeze in the winter. You are correct about the others.

CAPTCARB-REREAD GREGS METHOD AND IT MAKES SOME SINCE BUT I STILL HAVE ?'S ON SOME OF IT. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. I JUST GOT THIS 260 AND CAN'T BELIEVE THIS HASN'T CAME UP THAT MUCH ON THIS POST.

There are pages and pages of stuff on this subject including a US1 post about the holes you speak of and how to handle them. Try a search.

SCOTT , THIS SHOULD ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.

1 ST. IS THE MOTOR DUMPING WATER OUT OF BOTH HOSES AT IDLE OR ABOVE IDLE IN THE WATER NOT ON LAND.

2 ND HAVE YOU RAN IT IN THE WATER AND CHECKED THE HEADS , CAN YOU HOLD YOUR HAND ON THEM FOR MORE THAN A FEW SECONDS OR ARE THEY NICE AND COOL?

3RD YOUR GUAGE COULD BE OFF , YOUR MOTOR ONLY PULLS AROUND 7 LBS OF PRESSURE AT WIDE OPEN THROTTLE SO THERES A GOOD CHANCE THERE IS A PROBELEM WITH THE GUAGE WHETHER YOUR GARDEN HOSE MAKES IT WORK OR NOT. IF YOUR MOTOR IS NOT OVER HEATING AND IS DUMPING GOOD WATER THEN GET ANOTHER GUAGE.

DONT TRY TO MODIFY THE OFFSHORE GASKETS EITHER , THEY WORK GREAT IN THERE STOCK FASHION.

LET ME KNOW IF I CAN HELP IN ANY OTHER WAY , JOHN

IT PUMPS NO WATER AT IDLE IN WATER AND VERY LITTLE OUT POPET HOSE SIDE UNLESS ON PLANE AND RUNNING. WHILE RUNNING THEY ARE BOTH PUMPING BUT THE MINUTE I COME OFF PLANE IT STOPS. IT IS TO THE POINT OF MAKING MY HOT HORN GO OFF. WILL PROBABLY INSTALL DUAL GUAGES LIKE MOSS HAS. I HAVE 2 GAUGES AND BOTH READ THE SAME. THE BLOCK IS NOT PRESSUREING UP.

have you checked your impeller housing and what kind of gearcase do you have? when do you remember this starting to happen , do you know the circumstances?

I'm wondering if by some chance the holes that are taped into some tunerbases for hull water pickups may have been left unpluged:confused: If there are any holes dumping out the sides of the inlet cavity, that could be it, but i'm still alittle confused on whats going on! Maby somone thought those were for dumping or "Dry stacking" but if they did, they got them in the wrong spot:confused:
They need to dump out the exhaust cavity! If there's any dumping out the inlet, PLUG THEM !
